View Full Version : Question 3.0 TDI help needed
I could do with your advice, I have a 2007 A4 3.0 TDI that has always had a little rattle on warm start up when left for about 20 mins. Anyway driving down the motorway doing about 80 and I gets a sudden drop in power, I pulled off at my junction the engine was still running and idling fine. I had a 2 mile drive home, it drove ok untill I got over 2k rpm where it would hold back and there is a top end tapping/knocking.
That car is still starting and from cold no rattle, could the cam chain have jumped a tooth or has the chain streched causing the timing to advance. No engine management light came on at the time, however it did this morning when I started it but its not on now!
I have attached a video, what do you think?

It's really difficult to hear engine noises properly on videos mr-c, especially on diesels!
But if I heard the noise properly toward the end of the video then it sounds more crankshaft speed than (half speed) top end.
I've read of crankshaft vibration damper/pulley issues on these engines - worth having a Google?

Its really difficult to pin point it exactly. Its down at the garage now so I guess time will tell. Someone mentioned could even been an injector but I cant see that myself.
Slight up date, the engine management light fault showed up as the *Turbo there are no faults coming up regarding the timing! I guess that would make a little sense how the knocking only kicks in as the turbo spools up and the fact I have no power. Never heard of a turbo knocking though
*I don't know what the exact fault code, will find out more later
Bit more of an update. Fault code was showing a ****** wastegate actuator which explains the lack of power. New actuator being fitted tomorrow.
Very bizzarly the tapping/knocking noise has gone!!! The garage owners son was at my house on Sunday afternoon so he knows im not going mad.
Im at a loss
