I am looking at Audi A8's and would maybe consider A6. Main dealer warranty is tempting.
I've researched on here and found the V6 TDi is a problematic lump but by 2007 the tensioners and injectors were sorted. Is this a relatively safe bet.

If you gonna spend that sort of money try and buy a facelift A6 with the common rail engines

Do not buy an A6 without warranty preferably dealer, extend it after the 1 year then there really is nothing to worry about.

All V6 diesels were common rail, none were PD on the C6.
Are they that bad...
I thought the engine faults (timing chain plus tensioner fault and injectors were resolved) or are they generally just trouble.
I won't consider a FWD or less than 6 clyinder engine. Ideally an A8 but would be ok with an A6.

They can go wrong at any age, biggies are intake manifold runners, glowplugs and other misc. They aren't cheap to repair, nor service and your warranty (audi approved and extended) terms and conditions mean you need audi to service it.
crappy longlife servicing intervals don't make things any easier but you needn't to worry if you have the audi warranty .. just like me! :)
I used to run Mercedes, never bothered with warranty and used indie specialists to keep the costs...managable.
If the faults with the chains/tensions plus injectors are very unlikely to occur, and the manifold problem likely, whats a worse case scenario. £1k, £2k...etc. If a likely fault is over £1500, I tend to see warranties as good value. If they aren't likely or expensive I wouldn't bother but the timing chain reading is worrying.
I am assuming if regularly serviced (thereafter every 10k miles) would the turbos be ok, I'd get the transmission oil changed (every 40k miles). Are the ZF boxes that troublesome?

gearboxes aren't, my warranty has been paid for every year since i've had it with different work, mine is a 2008, will be the same asb engine as in that.
Crikey...worrying. I'll look for main dealer cars...
What went wrong with your car?

it'll work out cheaper in the long run.
nothing serious, just niggly things, mmi work, glowplugs, rear light lenses, interior trim, intake manifold runners, suspension bits all common faults.
Cheers, I will look for dealer sold A8/A6 Quattro's 2009 just to make sure I am clear of that timing gear fault and revised injectors. These looked very pricey to fix. Niggles I can handle but a warranty sure is nice.
I assume I would be clear of the major timing gear/injector faults posted in a 2009 car?

Anything 07 plate upwards is generally fine.
Brilliant. Minor faults I am used to with Mercedes and BMWs but never had such a serious fault.
BMW engines still have timing gear issues. Never seen a fault as bad on this as a Mercedes but I fancy a change. Truth be told, I am still disqualifed from driving but researching candidates now.
I could easily get a C/E/S350cdi and there are F all problems with those but fancy something different.
