Hi all,

Quick question - does the alarm have it's own battery?
I want to remove the car battery and leave it on charge from tomorrow evening till Wednesday or when the Ctek charger states it's full. Battery condition currently is 30-40% and given the battery is only 6 months old, I think I need to give it a good cycle.

But, obviously I am assuming the car cannot then be locked via remote and alarm won't be armed or is this via a secondary battery?

No access to mains due to location of parking so it will have to be battery out job

Thanks

Central locking is electric so no locking with the battery disconnected.

If you have a quattro car then you could set only the drivers door to open via the MMI, lock all doors, hit open (drivers door only) and climb through the car via the rear folding seats and disconnect the battery lying down. Take the battery out then lock the drivers door via the key barrel on the outside.

Why do you need to remove the battery for charging ?. I regularly charge my 2009Golf battery without disconnecting it . Been doing it for a few years without problems.

I'll assume you have a drive/garage to do that? :)
I could be anywhere on the road tomorrow when I get to the destination after work and have no access to mains power that can go over the street.

It's FWD with no folding rear seats.
This is going to be fun!

If the battery is out why worry about locking it? I'm not sure what locking does anyway (except satisfy insurance co's) - get's your windows broken by the scrotes it seems to me. Empty it out and put a steering lock on. Bloody alarm's pathetic anyway, and mostly ignored by Joe Public.

Recently I was researching what category the alarm on the A6 is so I could get the best deal on insurance. I was pleasantly surprised it's a thatcham cat 2. I've left my car unlocked without a battery for a couple days on my drive but would feel apprehensive leaving it on the road but perhaps it's no different then leaving it like that on the road :dunno:.

Akash have you tried to see if you can unlock the boot with the key if battery is disconnected? From what I recall doesn't the saloon have a key hole on the boot? Try the key with battery disconnected and boot lid open and manually flicking the lock on lid to lock position and then trying the key to open it. I hope that makes sense, only an idea but never done it myself.

Not all saloons have the key lock.

I'm assuming yours doesn't as it's a Quattro and as standard has folding seats for boot access? perhaps as Akash's is not Quattro it may have the key lock as will not have folding seats spec'd as standard. Perhaps in the case of non Quattro cars with folding seats they remove keylock :dunno:

Might be something to do with the boot release switch being fitted in the drivers door card bottom pocket.

Cheers guys
I do indeed have the key slot in the bootlid so I guess thats the way in

As long as the lid locks manually with the key without the battery then it's a case of just using the key itself to lock/unlock the doors and lock/unlock the boot.

Both of my A6's are quattro (I'm just referring to my cars below, others may be different):
- the prefacelift one has a key lock and the boot lid can be opened manually with the key (without reverse parking camera).
- the facelift one does not have a key lock, although I noticed the reverse parking camera is in its place. The manual states in order to open the boot lid manually, it needs to be done from inside (by folding down the backrests and using the key in a slot there - description and diagram is in the owners manual).

The doors can all be locked individually using the key. Passenger and rear doors by opening the door and using the key in a slot in the side to mechanically lock them before shutting the door. The drivers door can be locked/unlocked using the key lock as normal.

The only scenario where I don't know how you would manually open the boot lid is on a car which doesn't have folding backrests and a key lock in the boot lid.
Maybe it would be possible by connecting a battery under the bonnet to the jump start posts and then opening the boot lid?

Actually thats a very good point
I have a fairly large portable battery booster thing which has jump started the car in the past when the old battery had gone...I suppose in theory plugging that into the terminals under the bonnet would potentially run the electrics enough to unlock etc
I'll go and double check in a bit to ensure what I saw was the key slot

If you do remove battery & send power via slave points under bonnet make sure you insulated the cables in spare wheel well from shorting.

Thanks for info share six or out, there must be a rule to as and when a car will or will not have keylock. I don't think the boot release button causes it's deletion as Steve k locked his keys in boot once and had a non Quattro saloon with boot release, no folding seats & keylock on lid IIRC.

I have a spare battery, that is just fine (there is a story behind having such a spare) so if you're in the New Forest area, you could borrow that to charge your own (although a 20 minute run charges mine fully from flat)

Do you have all the codes for radio and/or anything else that will require a re-boot after completely removing power?

Sorry I just assumed that you had a drive or garage. Can't you use friends drive ?
