Hey guys I signed up today to ask a few questions!
Basically I do ALOT of motorway miles
I used to use a 55 plate MG ZS V6 to do the miles in, and frankly it would only reach 34mpg at 65mph, which was incredibly boring and pretty expensive costing me around £400 a month in fuel! (albeit that was Shell V Power Nitro)
So I have decided I need a diesel, and I have fell inlove with the B7 A4! Used to really want a B6 but the B7 looks so much more modern!

Ive been doing some research and the 2.0TDI seems to have a lot of mechanical problems.. Mainly the oil pump going nuclear!? I cant believe thats not been sorted on a recall!
Then theres the 3.0TDV which quite frankly sounds an amazing engine and I would love one! However they dont return the economy I require.
This leaves the 2.7TDI. I really want another V6 just for the smooth power and torque and the noise they make is so much better than a rickity 4pot! But I cant find much about REAL fuel economy anywhere other than they dont reach the claimed 55.4mpg on the motorway. I've heard remapping both V6 engines will give it much more power and drivability and around 10mpg more?! As long as I can achieve 50mpg at 70 on cruise control on the motorway I'll be happy.
I'll be looking a manual for the extra few MPG.

It'll be just a motorway mile muncher...
I'll be looking at Advants next week so hopefully you guys will have some more info for me before then so I can make the choice!

Cheers
Luke

50mpg from a 2.7 no chance. Get a 1.9 TDi and remap it, über reliability and big mpg.

If you're using it totally for motorway you don't need a V6. The v6s also cost mega money if they go wrong and have the added risk of a timing chain which is around £3k maybe more to replace.

That sucks!
'spose needs is musts! Is it just early B7s that are 1.9 as I'm looking for a more modern, lower mileage (well sub 100k) newer car. If I could find a 2.0 that has had this 'conversion' done or a reliable engine I'd be happy. Probably be looking at 170s over the 140 to be honest...

I know I'm looking for a motorway mile muncher but I still love power! My aim is around 200bhp give or take from my daily if FWD, probably 250ish if I get an AWD..
Although looking at Autotrader I doubt the quattro will meet my mpg requirements! :(

Max around 6 probably... Just saw quite a nice one on AT, S line, cruise control, 2WD 170bhp model with 130k on the clock.. Long MOT, timing belt done 13k ago, Lots of history... Looks nice

If I remember correctly I was getting around 40mpg on a run and 33mpg around town when I had my A4 3.0 tdi quattro

when I was in the market for an A4 I was determined to have a B7, it was so much better looking than the B6. I was advised on this forum by knowledgable individuals to go for the B6 1.9. I ignored that and lived to regret it.

A B6 1.9 TDI 130 is an awesome engine, bulletproof and does mega miles. It is also available in the B6 in avant Quattro sport form. What's not to like!

i got in a taxi recently, a passat with that engine. It was reading 500k miles and the owner loved it.

I owned by A4 2.0TDI for 5 years. None of the 2.0TDI are a match for the pre-2005 1.9 in my view.
