Hi all,
I'm about to buy a 2010 Highline Passat with the 2.0 CR Dpf 110bp engine,
it has high mileage though.... 188,000 km
it hasn't had the timing belt replaced yet which I think is due in or around 180,000 km?
its going to be a 220 km trip home with the car, should I be worried about it.... or is it good for another while?
thanks,
Rob.
PS. any thoughts on this model Passat,

I stick to 4yrs/60k which is the equivalent of 96k km's so if I owed that car from new it would be getting its second replacement in my ownership.

i would buy it but only drive it home once the belt is done, far too risky otherwise. so that either means getting the seller to do it, going up there and doing it yourself, or walking away and finding another car. if it does go its really going to ruin your day. don't forget to do a kit with tensioners and the water pump.

thanks guys.... lucky I asked,
I was told earlier that VW increased the intervals to 240,000 km..... not that I'm looking to stretch it till then, just want to get home safe
does anyone know the official intervals for the belt, pump etc etc
thanks

It will be in the service book but 4yrs/60k(96k) has never let me down.

I got the chassis number and rang my local VW dealership, its due at 210,000km but they advised me to get it be done around 200,000km or sooner,
so hopefully at 188,000km I'm safe to travel home and get her to the garage next week,
thanks again,
Rob.

From Sept 1st 2009 it is 5 years or 210.000 kms whichever comes first.

Hi again,
I was planning to go and view the car tomorrow but there is a problem,
the trader has told me that the service book didn't come with the car when he bought it,
he contacted Agnew's (main VW dealer) in Belfast and they issued him with a new one listing all the work they have done to the car,
they serviced it from 19,000 miles through to 73,000 but that is where is ends,
he claims that service work was done after that but he doesn't know by whom, he tried contacting the previous owner for this info without any joy,
he also claims that because the service indicator now shows that its due a service in 1500 miles it must have been serviced recently,
I know this sounds dodgy at best but to be fair to him he is taking a hit on the car because he was unable to locate the service book etc,
I know its a complete risk on my behalf but what kind of damage could the 2.0 CR engine sustain if it hadn't been serviced regularly after the 72,000 miles mark to 117,000
any other thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated,

Get it done now asap, no damage done if it hasn't been done (if it snaps = new engine) so count yourself lucky.

If service indictor is showing due in 1500 miles it definitely ain't been done recently!
You're looking at a car that has spent a third of its (possibly hard) life without a service record. The cam belt would the least of my worries.

recently was a poor choice of words from me.... he was trying to say that it was not overdue a service and must have been done by someone in the trade
as you cant re-set the service indicator like the older model Passat by using a specific sequence of button presses on the dash to do it, it needs to be done
with VAG specific diagnostics?? is this true?
by the way, the price we agreed over the phone was £5700..... for what its worth

At least get a VCDS scan done before you buy. But after all the banter sounds well dodgy to me
And £5,700 isn't cheap, considering the risk you're buying.
An '08 2.0L two-owners-from-new tFSI with 60k on the clock was on my local lot two months back.
Immac. FSH same price but asking. So must've gone for £5k.
There's plenty in the auction fields, it's that they're only letting them out
onto the market from fleet owners slowly soas not to distort the market too much. Get yourself down
to an auction and wait, you'll see something come your way.

News to me, but others will know better. It certainly wasn't the case on my 08 CR Highline.
Re-setting the service indicator is no guarantee that a service has actually been done. Not even a stamped up service book is a guarantee, but at least it's a step in the right direction. Oil that's been in for 40k might not be your friend. Or your turbo's.
