View Full Version : White smoke in reverse

Had our 07 2.0 TDI since April 5th and really enjoying the car.

Noticed white/possibly blue smoke coming from the exhausts when reversing or sometimes when stopping the smoke will fly past you.

Booked her into Midland VW after reading good things about it. The engine management light came on and then went off before the car went into the garage. After running a diagnostic the only thing that flagged was an engine software update. The mechanic did mention that an injector may need replacing soon but is fine for now - could this be causing the white smoke?

Purchased some DPF cleaner & told that we have a healthy car, a few notes at the bottom on the job sheet read 'engine software update, may then require g450 DPF pressure sensor'. Thoughts appreciated, we are driving to Italy in June and would like this sorting.

Welcome.

What was the fault code causing the engine light? A software update won't trigger the light.

Could well be the injector but they will need to do further tests to prove that it is.

18434/P2002/008194 - Ross-Tech Wiki (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/18434/P2002/008194)

18434/P2002/008194 - Particle Filter Bank 1: Malfunction
Possible Symptoms

Malfunction Indication Lamp (MIL) active

Possible Causes

Exhaust Pressure Sensor (G450) faulty
Diesel Particle Filter (DPF) faulty

Possible Solutions

Check/Replace Exhaust Pressure Sensor (G450)
Diesel Particle Filter (DPF)
Perform Emergency Regeneration (Refer to Specifications!)
Check/Replace Diesel Particle Filter (DPF)

Special Notes

Skoda Superb (3U) & VW Passat (3B) (Engine Codes: BGW, BSS, BWW) had issues with faulty Exhaust Pressure Sensors (G450), they were defective from factory and due to a leaking sealing the measured values were incorrect and resultet in wrong calculated particle filter load and unsuccessful regeneration cycles.

Get the sensor changed (genuine part only!) and go from there.

Through Midland VW? Cost estimate?

Is an engine update needed? I don't understand what the pros are for doing this. Thank you Chris.

No idea on cost, everywhere's different, you need the sensor changed at least.

Again, speak to them as they can advise whats needed re update.

You could always take it back to where you got it from. If its a dealer they should sort it

Nah, only got a pants 3 month warranty that hardly covers anything. Will get a quote to change the sensor. Thanks

And you're still within said warranty. Ask the seller to fix, it's what you're entitled to.

Regardless of the warranty period consumer law states that any fault that occurs on a car bought via a motor trader within 6 months of purchase is deemed to have been present at the time of purchase. Get the dealer to sort it

Had an engine update done and the sensor changed yesterday, going back in tomorrow to see if the EGA valve needs sorting.

So we've just had the EGA valve changed, still no difference.. Over £350 down the pan so far. The mechanic said the DPF is scratched and dented - showing that someone's removed it previously. The next step is to replace that but it's too expensive right now!

My main concern is our drive to Italy in 2 weeks, what are people's thoughts? Will it be ok to do the journey. The car is still pumping white smoke sometimes when reversing/stationary or slowing to a stop.

Thanks

Er why are you paying for it?

Does the car even have a DPF? Check on the data sticker in the spare wheel well for code 7GN, if it is present then a DPF is not fitted. If you cannot see 7GN then a DPF is fitted.

I'm guessing injector problems, DO NOT pay as you are well within your legal warranty period!

But it is not covered under the warranty. I have checked regarding consumer law, we don't seem to qualify as the car isn't exactly unfit for road use.. Appreciate your help.

You still have a 3 month minimum warranty/guarantee on all used car purchases bought from a business. If any problems arise then the seller has to fix.

In hindsight the car is unfit for purpose/road use as its billowing white smoke out from the exhaust so there is an apparent fault present!

Garage have palmed us off to the warranty people who have said they don't cover DPF.

Had the engine light come back on, booked it in for Monday - due to leave for Italy on Thursday. Guess we need to speak to the garage we bought it from again.

Not 100% sure on this but the supplying garage has to take care of repairs within the first 3 months? I've read that somewhere.

Somebody like eshrules know's all this consumer law stuff :o

johnsimcox has it covered, just in case you missed it - here it is again

It matters not one bloody bit what the dealer tells you - it is statutory law and if they attempt to refuse you a statutory right they are in breach of said consumer law.

If you're still unsure, talk to the citizens advice bureau

The only thing I will add is that if you bought the vehicle on finance, you must inform your finance company of the issues too - you're covered against nonsense like this under the Sale of goods Act 1979(as amended) implied terms.

I have found dealers to be far more accomodating when the finance company get involved.

The car has been back to the garage we bought it from and they have done numerous tests including the injectors and have found nothing. The engine light is back on now, don't know where to go from here except save some money for a new DPF possibly.. Shame.
