View Full Version : Golf Mk6 2009 SE Aircon farewell?

I was driving my car yesterday, and being nice weather I opened the window to feel a bit of breeze. At some point I realised that there was a squeaking noise coming out of the engine compartment. It was very similar to a slipping alternator belt. So I said let me put on the aircon to see if the noise gets worse (I am assuming that the alternator belt also drives the air-conditioner pump?). As soon as I switched on the aircon the squeaking increased - but the aircon didn't work and I only got air at the outside temperature coming into the cabin as if I did not switch on the aircon.
Any idea what this can be? Is it the aircon pump, electronic clutch, just a belt or a tensioner?
Thanks

I had a similar thing a few months back. It turned out to be the clutch/pulley on the A/C pump. Sadly, that meant a new pump. I was in a hurry to get it repaired, so told the garage to get a genuine VW part. That cost over £750 fitted! Car has never been near a VW service garage (nearest is 50 miles away) so VW were not the slightest interested in helping out with a goodwill gesture. The car had less than 35000 miles and was only 4 years old. I'd suggest that, if it is the same thing on your car, you look for a cheaper way to fix it, eg try an A/C specialist to see if they can repair or replace just the pulley.

ouch man that hurts! mine is same year too, 2009 and tdi, just it's the 2.0 140bhp - but I guess they use the same a/c pump. there is an a/c specialised garage here i'll try that... thanks for the advice.

I too had something similar with mine. That turned out to be a failed compressor. The car's 3 1/2 years old with a full vwsh. The repair bill was over £1000 at the dealer but vw offered to pay for the parts and 50% of the labour (cost me £369 including the diagnostic charge).
Apparently vw has issued a bulletin or something about failure of the compressor and they replace that and the dryer. It might be worth seeing what vw says as the new compressor is a modified part and if you make a contribution to the repair there's a 2 year guarantee.

It was the bolt and pulley. Apparently the bolt broke and the pulley had to be replaced and they had to rethread where the bolt screws in. Gas was missing so they had to recharge it. Cost me €195. Easter present :-(

That was lucky! Let's hope it now lasts forever.

I think my aircon may of gone today, not making the car much cooler, but still seems to be working sometimes maybe a bit.
I heard a kind of whooshing like gas escaping when I have used it the last couple of times, only when turning on for a second then AC worked fine until today.
sound familiar?

No mine was emitting a screeching noise from the engine bay and stopped working completely - no reduced cooling, just no cooling at all.

It's quite embarrassing that VW can't get their AC systems properly working. They fail regularly on the Mk5 so this should really have been sorted on the Mk6
