The car a 3.2 petrol A6 Quattro tells me that at just under 45k it's due for a service, the problem is, I seem to have misplaced the service manual :boggled:

From what I can gather it's oil & filter, fuel filter and a couple of air filters, am I missing anything here ? what's the thinking on tyre rotation, I have Hankook V12 Evo's {they seem to stick pretty well} ;) with about 10k {if that} on them.

Other than the above there seems to very slow radiator fluid leak somewhere, about a liter a month, I've had the car into an Audi Dealer, they couldn't find it even though they pressure tested it overnight, any thoughts on where that might be. This has been going on for months now but no one seems able to figure it out, thought I'd get some of that fluorescent dye and put add it to the rad, if there is a leak then a black light should show it up.

What was replaced last service? If you can't remember then do a visual inspection of all filters brakes etc.

Hello Chris, the previous owner had all the services done as per schedule.
I had brake work done about a year ago, so nothing has been neglected so to speak.

If it was main dealer service then they'll have the schedule recorded and can order you a new book and bring it up to date with the info they hold...inc stamps.

Or that was what Jag dealer did for me when I bought my car in 2008...dunno what Audi would charge?

Doesn't everyone when they have work on their car put it away any documentation immediately:confused:

Oh, and this thread might be worthwhile reading, not sure if it would be the same with a petrol engined car though:

Coolant loss (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?143939-Coolant-loss)

Maybe worthwhile to be near a bathroom from page 3 onwards :biglaugh:

As Mark says ring Audi and they'll sort a new duplicate service book and then its up to you to ring the dealers who serviced the car and ask for a new stamp.

Hello Mark,

Thanks for the above, appreciated, as for the service record well, the old bloke I bought the car off had misplaced them, but after contacting Audi they sent me copies of everything that had been done, nothing had been skipped and all done by the original dealer.

The problem I have is, we recently moved house, lots of stuff still in boxes, and although I know I have the service manual and the print outs that Audi sent me I can't lay my hands on them at the moment, so I'm guessing what's needed at 45k.

As for the local Dealer, they wanted >£200 to do the oil & filter stuff, but then insisted that the oil in the multitronic needed changing and this would cost me >400 quid !!! I baulked at that because I'm near sure that the car is triptronic and as such is a sealed unit ?

Other than the above, I'd particularly like to hear what folks think about tyre rotation on a 4WD.

Thanks again.

Bob.

No different to a fwd car, I usually swap mine around front to rear every 10k.

Have a set of summer and winter wheels and have covered only 1k miles per month. All tyres on that mileage have even wear so far.

What mileage do you do with what type of load?

Hello Mark & Chris,

I don't do much mileage {since I retired}, on average around 7k per year, 10k at the most, I've found the Hankook Evo's to be decent tyres, I'm not an aggressive driver the speed limit is fine for me, I aint in a rush anymore ;) as for the load, top weight is when my Staffy co-pilots.

The great man once said...."If you need to break the speed limit....you really should have left earlier!"* :biglaugh:

Hi Bob, have same car as yours.

As its a quattro you have a zf tiptronic gearbox, so oil change regime different to multitronic. Audi say filled for life, myself and others have had oil and strainer changed, I think though 45k maybe a bit soon.

Plugs last 60k so I think you are up for okl, filter, air filter and maybe pollen filter.

If not done for 2 years I would look to get air con regassed and brake fluid changed too.

Hope this helps.

Andy

Thanks for the pointer re the brake fluid, I'll add that to my list of filters & fluids, the plugs are good though I had them done when I bought the car, the air con is working fine so far, but I might as well get that done too.

As for the multitronic vs the triptronic, I asked {via email}, to be sure the Dealer in Preston was getting it right, only to be told twice that it was a multitronic not a triptronic, I gave them the chance to rethink it, but they insisted that it was a multitronic and that the oil should be changed, that was enough for me to start looking for a garage that I would have more confidence in {not to rip me off}.

As you say, 45k does seem to be a bit on the light side, especially as the car has an easy life, thanks for your input Andy {et-al} it's valued and appreciated. I think I'm sorted now.

quattro is definitely tiptronic :)

Hello Chris, aye, I figured it was, that's why I asked them twice, anyone can make a mistake, but when someone asks again you'd think that a Dealer would make sure they'd got their tale right, when they don't and they go on to insist that the work has to be done work that they estimated wouldn't leave much change out of 500 quid it makes you wonder don't it. Then again, maybe it's something they do for all triptronic boxes that get brought in...

to be honest most of them don't know the difference between the both :p

I suppose they err on the safe side, the safe in the office that is...

It doesn't fill you with confidence when you can't trust their word, I'll be looking for an independent garage to do the work.

As I may have said earlier I had my brake fluid and coolant done at Halfords for £53 inc.

Audi warrant the tranny for 80k miles so it's fair to get it done around about that, I had mine done at 82k
I initially did a search on here of ATF fluid and transmission fluid without much success so thought it would be a good idea to have a single thread listing compatible/correct ATF to use for tiptronic boxes.

As we know Audi main dealers & specialists charge anything from £25-£33 per liter which (many feel) is a little bit of a rip off. Also some places (and posts) state anything between 5-9 liters to refill once tranny sump removed. Note it should be the higher number if the filter/strainer is removed at the same time but mine used 7 with the filter replacement. Costs:

Audi main Dealer
£32.88 inc VAT per liter (Shell M.1375.4/Lifeguard 6) £295.92
£76.06 inc Vat filter/strainer/gasket (£37.73 of which is just the rubber gasket!!)
£371.98 inc VAT total

Bristol Transmissions
£9.00 aftermarket fluid (that I have used) ZF Lifeguard 6, Shell M 1375.4,Transmission Fluid, ATF, (http://www.bristoltransmissions.co.uk/shop/product.php?id_product=88) Mine needed 7 liters
£50.40 inc Vat filter/strainer/gasket (part no BTL2028)
£113.40 inc VAT total

Total saving of £258.58 in parts alone!

Labour charge at Audi is £220+VAT
Labour charge at Bristol Transmissions £133 inc VAT

So getting it done independantly seems to be the way to go! I definately noticed an improvement in the smoothness of the box after my change. :)

Annoyingly I have 10l of Esso LT 171141 (for my Jaguar) in my garage which is effectively Lifeguard 5 which I've been told isn't compatible...boo hoo hiss!!
