My concert radio has some cosmetic damage and I have the chance of swapping it out of an 09 plate A5. Looks identical but was wondering about the security implications. Can they both be recoded using VCDS or is it a dealer only procedure?

It should just be a matter of inputting the radio code into it once changed over.
I'm pretty sure they don't have component protection.

I'm pretty sure it's the opposite to be honest. No code. But there is component protection. And dealer only. When I had a new unit fitted I had to go with the installer to the dealers to get the protection removed

If you put a 'paired' system form one car into another it will ask for the code
Once entered it will now pair in the new car and be good from then on
That's how I have seen it work on the swaps I have done for people
If the system is on protection mode it normally means the wrong code has been entered too many times so now the dealer needs to unlock

Are you sure you are talking from experience of the b8 in particular? I know the code system is used for other cars. But sure the b8 uses component protection that needs a dealer tool to remove. Think it even mentions it in the manual.
The b8 has no option to enter a code. The unit is paired to a particular car at the factory. If it's moved to another car. It needs to be taken to a dealer to unlink from the old car, and relink to the new car. When I had my new concert fitted, it would turn on but with no sound, and just said "component protection active" on the screen until the dealer tinkered with it.
This was definitely a dealer only job as well. As I had to actually go to the dealers with my professional installer as he wasn't able to do himself after fitting the unit (he did have vcds, but it's a dealer only tool used)

Thanks for the reply, couldn't find any form of code in either car so in the end swapped the fascia off them which only took a few seconds once the radio was out no code no protection cars as good as new now.
Now to sort the bluetooth options...
