View Full Version : Was it worth fitting winter tyres?

Left it until December before they went on and only remember driving a dozen or so times when temps were below 7 degrees.

Albeit it has been wet and I live in the Southwest which typically doesn't get harsh winters.

Seriously thinking about switching back to my Michy Pilot Super Sports before the end of March :(

I'm switching back next week after MOT, no need for them this year!

4 new Michelin Primacys ordered to celebrate the end of winter :p

i put avon ice tourings on in september as i needed 4 new tyres anyway. just fitted 4 new avon zv5's. the winters never had anything worse than rain. the zv5's are like glue.

Summers on already...in the part of England that I live in winter tyres were a waste of time; however I was in Czech Republic over Christmas and New Year and there they are mandatory between November and March so had to fit them for there....even though it was around 13C for the duration of the stay!!!

I'll get next winter about of mine again, that'll be 3 winters. Tyres have faired pretty well.

Yep my Michy Pilot Super Sports go back on next Thursday (27th) and expect them to stay on until Dec. Local place just charging me £24 inc VAT as am supplying my own wheel weights in black to match my black powdercoated Ronals.

Only covered just 3k miles this year on my winters, and despite them being pre-worn they still have over 5mm of tread left, despite being 4yrs old (2yrs with me) I can't see any signs of them failing, so hope they'll last another 2 x winters!

Personal perspective......total waste of time. Didn't even go skiing this year. :( Only did 3.5k on the winters this year. Reckon I'll get another two out of them.

Summers back on last week including a pair of Dunlop SP Sport Maxx s on the front.

Have also gone for 4 new Hankook Kinergys on the A2. Good wet grip and low rolling resistance plus low noise rating. They've transformed the car and also come in bigger sizes.

Mine have 3mm left all around, will get next year out of them then will need replaced.

Snow and ice tonight means slidy times in the A6 :) driving the A3 this morning felt like a totally different car on the summers.

Just out of curiosity, how do people store their winter tyres for the rest of the year?
Obviously indoors but flat/upright/on stands or lobbed into a corner of the shed till needed?

I just stack mine on top of one other then adjust pressures when putting them back on.

Stack (but not with the posh bags) and rotate every 3 weeks or so to avoid flatspots.

The first year I've not put them on a wheel stand & instead stacked them with carpet pieces and plastic between

Usually do this:

Jet Wash
Car Shampoo
Jetwash
Dry
Remove wheel weights
Wheel Wax or Collonite to rims
Deflate by 10psi
Lithium Grease on tyre sidewalls
