hello all!
this is my first post so hi and thanks for any help!
i'm going to view a 2001 (x) lt35 lwb luton on tuesday night (link below); seller says vehicle has covered ~200k miles and had a recon engine at ~100k, asking price is £2195. he says there is a full service history. (in case this is a great deal and someone reads this and wants to gazump me you should know i've given a deposit to secure until i view. this may be foolish but he assures me there are no dodgy-sounds/problems, and that he'll refund if i find a problem, i can't find much to compete at that price at the moment so even if i end up losing my deposit it's a gamble i'm willing to take) seller's website calls them Outback Trade Sales (Outback Trade Sales | Cars, Commercials & 4x4's (http://www.outbacktradesales.co.uk/)) although the bank is in the name of JBG motors ltd.
i was originally hoping to get an mk2 lt or mk1 sprinter with under 100k miles for ~£4k but it seems that ~£6k is a more realistic figure. with this in mind i'm going cheaper and higher miles leaving cash in bank for immediate replacement of all belts (including cam) oil and filters etc and potential engine/gearbox replacement in the short-mid term.
i've been reading lots of threads about lts and am aware of some of issues they suffer from but would like a run-down on what to look for - i'm pretty handy but don't have much actual mechanic knowledge/experience and none at all with vw.
so my questions:
1) is 2200 a fair price?
2) i'm aware that 'recon' is an undefined term - what do i need to ask/what proof can i ask to see to establish if it is a full rebuild or simply a scrapper dumped in?
3) which specific components should i inspect and where exactly are they/how do i determine their condition?
4) when test-driving what should i be listening/watching/feeling for?
5) i'll be converting into a full-time live-in vehicle so any info specific to that would be great.
6) do you know anything about Outback Trade Sales/ JBG Motors in Isleham?
7) do you have/know of a superior vehicle for same price or equivalent vehicle going cheaper? (or superior for more money if it's great!)
thanks so much for any insight you can offer!
