The old b5 highline was replaced with a 59 R Line 110 diesel Passat with 50000 miles and it's taking a bit of getting used to as there seems to be a bit of noise over 20mph, just as if something is resonating but it does not get any worse with increasing speed. New mot so there should not be any worn bearings, 235 45 r 17 tyres are all Pirelli, p zeros which have about two thirds left on the back and new cinturatos on the front.

Anybody else find the R line noisy ??

Does it happen at the time?

Seems to be there all the time but this afternoon I had a rake around in the boot and found that the spare wheel was not secured as it should also the cover for the jack had only one of the hold down tabs secure and there was a first aid box loose too so all was secured as they should and it made no difference but it sure is a noisy beast compared with the old highline. Maybe the size of the tyres has a lot to do with the racket as I have never had a car with suck wide boots.

Just checked all the tyre pressures and noticed that the tracking is out a little.

The rear tracking is sometimes out slightly on these cars which develops a sawtooth edge on the rear tyres.
Try brushing your hand over the tyre treads in both directions, especially either the inside or outside edge.
If it feels rough in one direction, that will probably be your problem.
Will need tracking corrected & new tyres if that is the case.

I had the tracking done today but not at a vw garage, it's still noisy, freewheeled down a nice long hill at 30mph and still noisy but I will check the rear tyres tomorrow, maybe even swap front to back later in the week, just spent some time trawling the web and I am not the only one with a noisy Passat. I am way too mean to put two new tyres on as there is still 2/3 left in the rears.

The resonating racket is really taking the pleasure out of driving the car and I have only had it three weeks.:aargh4:

If the tyres have already developed a sawtooth to the tread, correcting the tracking won't get rid of the noise.
You could try swapping to the front, perhaps NSR to OSF & OSR to NSF, then tyre would be rotating in the opposite direction.
Maybee worth a try.

Success, rear wheels switched over with the front = no resonating although there is a little noise from the front end and yes the edges of the rears were feathered slightly.

Contentment at last.

Have you had the rear tracking checked? If not you'll have the same problem with the rears feathering again.

Not sure what they did so I will have to go back and find out on Monday, probably only done front.

And I hope you're using a laser tracking fitted shop such as a Hunter franchise?
You'll need all round -- it's the rear camber that goes out

Not sure about that Richard, sawtooth and the consequent noise is usually caused by the rears toeing out instead of in. Camber will just cause the inside to wear out smoothly and silently?

It's simply the tyres, the newer cars get the more road noise gets into the car and don't think cos a tyre costs £150 it's any quieter than a £50 one, it's the compound that counts, want miles pick hard, want comfort and quiet pick soft, try some Dunlops when they are worn out.

6000 miles down the road and the noise was beginning all over again and the rear tyre edge was starting to feather so it was in for four wheel tracking last week and hopefully everything is ok now.
