Alhambra auxilary heater and loss of power.

I have a 2003 Alhambra that has just had an injector wiring loom replaced as it was showing a fault with injector one. This has sorted the problem. However at about the same time the auxiliary heater started to make a whining noise followed by smoke from the pipe under left passenger side and strong smell of diesel. I have read that it can be an expensive replacement. I notice on some forums that it can easily be disconnected as a quick fix. I also have been told that it has automatic cutoff if it fails to engage after 5 attempts. I did have a starter problem which required a rebuild and in my earlier attempts before rebuild I did attempt to start the car on more than 5 attempts as I was trying to eliminate others problems before figuring out it was indeed the starter.

So really my question is regarding the auxiliary heater. There may not be any problem with the auxiliary heater if it is just that it has cutoff from trying to engage on more than 5 attempts and do I need to get a code or fault cleared and will this sort the problem?

I notice also the car seems to be down on power when trying to pick up speed. It's almost like driving against a strong wind. Put the accelerator and it goes nowhere. Is this related to the unit?

I would think not but has anybody else experienced this type of problem?

Or is it related to the injector wiring loom? Do I need to clear a fault code regarding injector 1?
