Boot Latch Spring

Hi,
My 07 B6 Highline has a strange issue. I've searched the net but found nothing. The boot latch or handle works fine opening the boot but it won't spring back into place when I release it. This is the VW Emblem on the boot lid. Is it possible to repair this by fitting a new spring or is it bunged up with gunge? Or do I need to buy a new unit?

Best thing is to remove the panel inside the boot lid and have a look. It's held in place by clips around the edges and 4 (I think, can't remember) screws in the recess where you put your hand to pull the lid shut (you'll have to look for these). Ease the panel up carefully round the edge and you'll find where the clips are. A forked piece of flat steel is best, but a wide screwdriver or knife would do - I made my own.
