Cooling fan comes on once ignition is turned off?

Did a 25mile trip just now - completely clear road with cruise control at 60mph right to my destination. Car was turned off for 9ish hours previous to this.

Once I got there and turned the ignition off, the cooling fans came on at full speed. Was quite loud and after about 5 minutes I got worried. I tuned the car on, engine temp was at 60degrees so quite low. I turned the car back off and the fan was still on. This lasted for about 15 minutes.

Ive done some research on this and believe that the car may have been doing a dpf regen.

Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?

Completely normal and it is a DPF regen finishing/interrupted.

Same happens to me occasionally - 15 mile drive into work, park up and as I'm walking away fans are blasting at full speed. I assumed it was normal, would be interested to know exactly what is going on. Most of my journeys are short, so could be a dpf regen I suppose ??

It's normal, don't worry about it.

Just make sure the car is getting a good drive once a week to allow the process to finish.

My trips are typically short too (3 miles to work) but do 2 longer trips a week minimum.

As said, completely normal. Surprised me the first time it happened, because as well as the fan running it was blasting hot air from under the car and unexpected as I have quite a quick, 20 mile run to work.

Mine's a multi-tronic and I get warning that it's about to start by the engine revving more than normal as I come to a halt.

I had a similar question and responses a while back. They should really tell you about this when they hand over the car because if you have no idea what it is (like I did) it can be quite worrying! Oh and mine had the heat and stink as well.

I had a modern diesel BMW before this with a DPF and I'll be damned if I could ever tell you when the DPF re-generated. There are an awful lot of things on the A6 that let the car down against BMW in regards to finesse.

Run flat tyres - what a disaster, cost too much and it feels like you are travelling along on a bag of rocks. Interior not a patch on the Audi and as for rear wheel drive, you dont get any marks for finesse when you cant get the car out of your drive when it snows.

Maybe mine didn't ever regenerate, could be possible!

Regarding the rest, I'm derailing the thread now but for the sake of argument / balance :

rfts - personal preference and a little bit of what generation tyre you had. I didn't mind them personally but easily fixed either at cost to get rid or just to replace with normal tyres once worn at which point they'd be cheaper tyres so 'saving' money. I'm reaching a bit there.

interior - largely down to the bmw model and trim I suspect. I'm not overly impressed with the a6 interior (beyond the colour dis). Sharing components across the VAG range doesn't help. Sitting in my colleagues bottom of the range base spec skoda and thinking 'this seems very familiar' isn't a tick in the box for the a6. Take the leather seats out of the a6 and it would be 'hmmm'. The one thing the a6 has going for it is the generous base spec in terms of toys and kit. Value for money (relatively to the bmw options list game) but on quality compared to other Marques in the same bracket similarly spec'd - not so sure.

Rwd / snow - a6 is no better. And once moving rwd or fwd don't come into it when braking on snow. The answer is the same for both - winter tyres. Funnily my m5 on summers is better behaved than either my old 1 series or the a6 on summers in the snow. Go figure.
