View Full Version : Considering a change?

Well, I think after 7 long but happy years it may be time for a change!
I'm seriously considering this, a Jaguar 2.7 Tdvi Sovereign LWB Auto.
Its in more or less mint condition, one previous owner with 60k miles and FSH, 12 month warranty, 6 months RFL and serviced around 500 miles ago

Std form gives 204bhp, but I'll be looking at a remap to around 260bhp more or less immediately, possibly a dark smoked window tint and maybe dvd headrests upgrade.
Quite excited but yet sad at the same time :approve::scared::Screem::grouphug::approve::appro ve::approve: the emoticons probably adequately describe it I guess....lol
Having checked out what I can get for my A6 ....
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/jaycam0802/103.jpg (http://s140.photobucket.com/user/jaycam0802/media/103.jpg.html)
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/jaycam0802/102.jpg (http://s140.photobucket.com/user/jaycam0802/media/102.jpg.html)
which is not a lot, I think I'll be keeping her too.
At 110k miles she's still in great shape, doesn't cause too many problems and I've invested just wayyyy too much time n money to give her away.
So it looks like I'll be giving her ( with a heavy heart ) to my wife
I don't know who's more scared, her or me, cos god forbid she comes home with an alloy trashed or doesn't keep it in immaculate condition - What am I saying, that'll be down to me anyway.
So she may stay in the family and instead, we'll move the Passat along.
A really nice 53 plate ( 30/12/2003 ) with my old A6 TT Trapeze wheels on, good tyres, about 11months Mot and 3-4 months tax that has hardly missed a beat....I'mm getting the rear parking sensors fitted tomorrow, so she should be golden after that.
I'll keep you all updated
Cheers

Good luck with whatever you decide Jim. Personally I prefer the XF/XJ. The one you've posted above always looks like a car for retirement, but that's just personal preference. It would be nice to get that extra power under your right foot.
I'd worry about the build quality of Jags though (I have to be cafeful here, with your association with Jags lol). My uncle bought a pre-registered XF afew months ago (he's a Glaswegian, so he wasn't going to buy new, was he? Lol). The amount of things that went wrong on it was unbelievable - buttons breaking, fuel flap failing etc etc etc. He got rid after a couple of months & bought an E Class instead. C6 Facelift will be my next motor - many miles of the trouble-free motoring, courtesy of the commonrail engine.

Hey Paul, thanks for the comments.
I hear ya on the retirement thing, but I could have had a newer shape version but liked this style much better, it exudes class IMO
The extra power will be nice especially after the remap!
No worries on the quality front from me ( I run a Jag forum after all and know the pitfalls )
Reliability - I've had so much trouble with my A6 its unbelievable as have many many others here, from lights that leak to egr valves, porous cylinder heads and a lot more besides.
I'm definitely not brand bashing though, loved my A6 from day 1 and still do, which is why I'm keeping it.
The build quality / reliability of the Jag is the remnant from 20+ years ago, much much better under Ford and now Tata...............we like to keep it quiet as it keeps prices down.
Jaguar slogan of "Grace, Pace & Space" says it all for me and is a byword for luxury, elegance and class.
Still have the A6 so will be around from time to time
All my best Paul

Cheers Jim, I know you run the Jag forum & are still a big fan, so I was hoping you wouldn't take offence lol. All thise problems that you mention though about the A6 were with the pre-facelift & pd engines. That's why I'm itching to get to the end of my HP agreement so I can get the facelift CR engine with it's reliability.
Not sure about the new reliability of the Jaaaags, as my Uncles was a 13 plate I think & the problems were numerous. You're in a better position than me to keep an eye on the sort of problems people are having with their Jaaaags.

Much as I love my Audi, my heart could easily be stolen by another Jag... something about the XJ too - they always seem that 'cut above' to me; even although my one financially raped me, I still miss it. I like your thinking on keeping the A6 and moving the Passat on Jim - and whoever gets the Passat is getting a good motor too; knowing the way you look after your cars, it will be as near mint as dammit and the B5.5 are a good solid motor to boot.
We will of course need more pictures when you get her home.

The new XJ is one of my favourite looking cars on the road right now - couldn't afford one though unfortunately.

There really is just sumthin about the Jags.......As I said, I could have had the newer type, but this style really grips me, classic lines IMO
It would have killed me to have had to get rid of the A6, I love her to bits, have been thru so much with her and she still looks great for 7 years and 100k....shines up beautifully.
The Passat will be a great car for someone mate, hardly ever missed a beat, built like a tank, great economy, actually pretty quick for what it is too.
My wifes daily driver so the last 60k miles have all been Eaaassssyy miles, shame to part with her really but something has to go.
I'll try and remember to post some pics if / when I can, but will still be about for the A6 anyway, so see you around no doubt.

My Jag's going to be sold this year after 9 years of happy ownership. Once the known issues addressed and the Lpg conversion, ecu flash and cat bypass putting down 320bhp VERY loudly and 75mpg and cheap insurance! A7 BiTdi for me next but probs not until 2016
Until then probs an economical golf dsg as a runabout.
Good luck Jim...whatever you decide on.

an absolutely gorgeous looking car. my old man has had a few, mk1 3.4 in 63 mk2 in oz in 66, 240 and 340 , a series 2 xj6 4.2 swb manual, very rare car, daimler sov, now drives an astra. i would love a 4 litre supercharged one, just about available in my price range.
but seriously, a diesel jag, whatever were they thinking hahaha:)
That looks lush Jim, I very nearly bought an XF with the same engine! Was getting a great deal but opted for the A6 instead... I still think what if.. lol
Keep us updated and I'll look forward to seeing the new beast B)

Thanks Zol.....I think its gorgeous too, especially love the front grilles and older style round lights. For me its kinda retro / modern but a classic
Hey, I may do weddings on Saturdays / Sundays, who knows?....lol
This was me out testing the new 3.0d XJ.....really nice, more modern obviously

I totally hear you on the bigger more powerful lusty petrols, but can't afford them basically, I'm too poor unfortunately, maybe one day.
Here's me when I was testing the 5.0 Supercharged V8 500bhp XKR......Had Speed pack enabled removing the limiter so it was capable of 174mph and 0-60 was around 4.2 secs I believe.
Now that is a car!!!!

but seriously, a diesel jag, whatever were they thinking hahaha:)
I had this same reaction from the jag community (XKEC & JEC) when I proposed my conversion in 2004, mine was the first car in the UK.
They all went quiet when I asked if they were the same naysayers that were up in arms when the first SC or diesel was proposed :) :) :)
At that time I think unleaded was 87ppl and LPG 32ppl!!

Thanks for all the comments guys, much appreciated.
She's been serviced n looked after regularly and on time, with a service just done very recently.
Assuming all is well upon collection, I'm going with my gut and visiting a recomended remapper to take her from 204bhp to around 260bhp and 500nm of torque........
This could be completed in around a few hours of owning the car and probably complete & utter madness, but YOLO ( You Only Live Once ) as they say.
If all goes according to plan, I should be there for around 12.30 do the checks / double checks, test drive etc and complete all paperwork.
Insurance etc already in place.
I can be at the remappers I reckon for around 4.30 and done for around 5.30pm
He's highly recomended and already done around 50 Jags as well as being an owner, all for £245

Well I have to say publicly Jim that I take back my commrnts about the Jag being a car for retirement. It's a different car when you see it in person & it's a beaut. Very jealous of the power you now have under your right foot - it goes like stink!

Thanks so much for the kind comments on the "old mans car" Paul...lol
Really appreciated.
As I explained to you, it has a couple of minor issues that I'm working through but should be great when I've completed them. As part of that, I had it Terracleaned this morning and all went well, having done 60+ miles after looks like perhaps a few extra mpg but too early to really tell yet.
It was a really cool opportunity to catch up with you while you were in the area. Maybe we can do it again sometime as you say, get Aly and a few others together and have a mini meet, or I'll give you a buzz next time I'm passing and see if you're around?
Your ride was looking pretty good too, in really great condition for year and mileage, a real credit to you Paul.
Shame the Audi wasn't around and we could've got a pic for the forum, maybe even added the Jag in there somewhere...lol
All my best

It was dry today, sunny at times then a little overcast, but dry...
I took the opportunity to spend a few hours and apply some Poorboys Blackhole over the car.
As stated before its black, and yes, there are swirl marks.
The Poorboys Blackhole does a great job of filling / masking these and makes an amazing difference, although it really has to be seen in person, pictures really don't do it justice.
The finish before when clean is a little like 4000 grit sandpaper almost, afterwards its more like Glass and the difference shows...

shortly after buying my XJ I began to hear the rear differential whine, concerning......
I called the aftermarket warranty company that covered the car from when I bought it via the dealership and initiated a claim.
To be honest I didn't hold out much hope but thought I'd give it my best shot.
The car was booked in to the local Indy and the warranty enginer came out to inspect it, we got on fairly well and he agreed it was the rear diferential problem, and would look into it further.
I got the call today, that they are standing by their warranty and paying for the full, all singing all dancing replacement. This will be the superseded / upgraded version to include new prop shaft and drive shafts, a total of over £3000 + vat + labour, so a hefty sum!!

Ok, so probably like a few here with the bigger rims I have an issue with my 20" Callisto alloys
They're in good shape ( good not great, but still good ) as regards the finish, but....
After checking brakes ( all seem good ) front suspension and rear suspension all done, tyres all seem ok, I suspect that my wheels may be a little buckled.......nothing to really see but on a balancer or car on a lift with engine running there is a slight movement.
My guess is at around 70mph or maybe a little more somtimes that is amplified significantly, so today, I went to visit Wheelpro Scotland...
They're based in Easterhouse just off the M8 Jcntn 9 near Real Radio, and also have branches in the West of Glasgow and Edinburgh.
They're going to straighten or ( round out ) my wheels and do a FULL refurb on them, stripping them right back then applying the finish after being reworked, for a very good price!!
There's so many combinations they can offer it'll make you dizzy....lol
I'm going for a hyper silver on mine, with a nice metallic flake...
They also had this in for a customer as they also offer hydro dipping....wow
There was also some interior door trims, dash inlays etc as well as RangeRover grilles there, all done too...

Differential.........
Well, I forgot to say that the parts were on backorder, Germany I believe?
Anyhow, its been re arranged and now going in on Wednesday...
I don't know how helpful the guys at Prestige will be, but I'll ask them if they'll open the diff, si I can get some pics ofwhat it looks like at 64k miles.........
Don't know if I hold out much hope, but I can always ask.

Looking god Jim,
can I ask how long it took for the wheel refurb? Did you have to leave the car there for a few days?

Thanks Duggy.....
They offer a same day, next day or 2-3 day service iirc, with varying price levels to suit.....
I highly recomend them Duggy if you're considering this service..........I used the depot in the East of Glasgow, they also have one in the West and in Edinburgh.

So had a little time over the holiday weekend and spent a little on the car.
Engine bay detailed again, this time cleaning the underbonnet liner....It had gotten dirty over time and needed refreshing, looks much better now!
No pics so you'll have o trust me on that...lol
Also greased all door hinges, bonnet / boot hinges etc and applied another layer of PB Black hole, shiny car!
Going in to Prestige Jaguar tomorrow for the replacement rear diff, so that'll be something else checked off the list.
Slowly but surely getting there :approve:

Well, car is in with Prestige Jaguar today, dropped off at 8am this morning, so the dif is finally getting done!!
Just called for an update........seemingly had problems getting the driveshafts out, seized seemingly!
Anyhow, on with it now and the diff to come out and then all to be replaced, so should be collecting tonight.
I have asked if its possible to split the diff so I can take pics to see what sort on condition its in, I'm sure more than a few would like to see this, but unsure whether they will have the time, but fingers crossed.

Update
Well it looks like someone at the parts dept in Jaguar didn't check against the Vin number and sent out the wrong propshaft, they sent the std version as against the LWB as required for my car :smashfrea
So the new rear diff installed along with drive shafts etc and all ready good to go, but the propshaft is wrong, so will have to wait until the correct part is received tomorrow now!
This is the new upgraded version I've been informed and seemingly there is a tsb out for this.
Anyhow, pics of the car as is at the moment.......
Firstly, here's Dougie ( the owner and Mastertech 's ) toolbox......

I did ask if they could open up the old diff to have a look at, see where the issues are, take some pics etc but it is a no go I'm afraid.
New LWB prop shaft should arrive tomorrow in the am and car ready by around lunchtime.
I'm looking forward to picking her up and hoping for a quiet ride home.
I've not followed Jag too closely since my old man's XJS - V12 HE, lovely car - was written off years ago but I assumed the XJR was only available in SWB flavour.
Would that explain why they sent you a SWB prop?

No parts man error Sam, they didn't check the VIN
Its not an XJR lol....Its the 2.7d albeit remapped to 245bhp with over 500+nm of torque.
Anyhow, should all be resolved today, all being well.
I assumed they too thought it was an R - the badge had me fooled(!) - and sent the part on that basis.
I missed your sig too, silly me. I must pay more attention in future!

Hi Sam, no the Indy sent the parts request direct to Jaguar giving reg number and VIN
The parts guy should've checked the TSB but obviously just looked at the first one on the list ( for the SWB version ) and sent that, so someone not doing their job correctly.
No big deal, should all be good later today
The badge is just a little kiddology for the boy racer crowd......anyone in the know, knows what it is

Well, the car is back home now and all good
She is now as quiet as the proverbial church mouse, well......I may need to get new tyres as the road noise is now bugging me...lol
Thanks Prestige for a job well done and all for no pennies too!
I'll be seeing them on Saturday as I'm helping them with the move and hope to get all the necessary papework then, maybe even a copy of the tsb too.

Lovely looking car Jim
I def see the appeal for it but have to say..(only my opinion)
I had a 3.0 x type sport, and just changed my XF for the A5 I am a sucker for how awesome the jags look but think they are dreadful to drive compared to the German stuff. I totally see the attraction though and wish you health and happiness with the big cat.... She does look braw :-)

I'd have to agree with the above, albeit my Jag is old it does benefit from 2005 springs and a full polybush set. What is a sports GT I find that it wallows far more than my humble 3.0 SE quattro in the corners.
Was considering the XF at the time of my A6 purchase but it didn't (IMO) have the same presence nor the range (80l tank as opposed to 67 (?) and would not have been as accomplished and safe in all weathers.
Far be it for me to knock the leaping cat marque.
Happy motoring!

Have to say I agree with some of the comments, but here's my take....
They are 2 totally different cars and I love them both to bits, albeit my A6 is fast becoming a runabout with kerbed alloys etc....:zx11:
I had a chance to drive her again a few days ago, and she still runs like a dream, still a really good fit as far as I'm concerned.......always used to get plenty of compliments on her too although she was by no means top of the range , just kept clean and looking the best she could.
She did & does handle the bends quite well and always a smooth drive.
The Jag XJ is a much larger car, especially so being the LWB version but that means there's acres of space both front and rear. When booted she goes like a scalded cat ( stabbed rat or whatever you prefer ) and takes more than a few by surprise for such a big car.
To be honest though she's more of a luxury barge and not a race car, the RWD can make for many a nervous moment especially in the wet.
I've never had so many compliments, looks, approving nods, waves etc as in any other car though, and that says something of peoples perceptions I guess.
She's really more of a cruise, although you can choose to surf the wave of power when demanded and 150 has been reached with relative ease.
Different cars and I love them both

OK look at this objectively If you are comparing a 2.7 XJ to a 3.0 A6 regardless of how either was tuned the A6 will trounce it, goes without saying that the larger engine will go quicker...with me so far if you were comparing a 2.0 A6 with a 2.7 will be t'other way around
Jags in my experience (unless you go for a sports coupe') are for wafting, I think they invented the word!
As a child in the 60's I always used to wonder why we were overtaking Jags and Rollers in a Hillman Minx. Not until I hit my 30's did I realise that "Anywhere they were going people would wait for them!!"
So when you reach a certain age the waft outweighs the urgency and driving responsiveness.
Am not saying Jim's a Fat@rse honest!! :biglaugh:

Thanks, it was when I ran it, the wife's had it for just over a year now and it's trashed I'm afraid.......lost the will to live as far as it goes now, all 4 wheels kerbed quite badly and front bumper scratched / scraped, plus a few dings here n there, totally different car.
Not washed from one week to the next lest alone one day to the next, such a shame.
All my energies now go into my Jaguar XJ X358 as below....

Don't worry Jim, she'll soon tire of driving a dirty car with dents and dings.
Then you can buy her a new one! :)
