View Full Version : Recoding key fob from one car to another

As I've mentioned in another post I now have a 2.5tdi Avant to replace my recently deceased 1.9tdi. The new car has a key fob with no key as it broke so the fob is attached to the valet key. I still have 2 fobs from my previous A4. Is there any way I can get a new key part of the fob recut and then the immobiliser part recoded for a reasonable price without going to Audi? I'd just like to have a spare key as I'm quite absent minded and likely to lock myself out the car at some point! Thanks for any suggestions.

Second hand keys won't work the transponder is locked so will have to be replaced.
Just get a new blade cut for your existing fob will only be about £20 from a key cutter. You remove the blade by removing the roll pin on the pivoting arm.

Thanks for the reply. I'll do as you say. I'm just wondering then why loads if people sell their second hand key fobs on eBay? I wonder what use they are to other people?

Im convinced it's the same keys going round and around.
Dealers won't entertain them nor will most competent auto locksmiths.

You may be right? Perhaps people are buying them thinking that they can be recoded then.

Yeah I get at least 3 enquires a week regarding second hand keys, I guess most just try and recoup there money by selling it on.

Depends what IMMO version you do have on your car. If you have a immo2 then the keys will code no problem, if immo3 then the transponder needs swapping- it's £4 from some places... You will need the 4 digit code which some tools will retrieve from the instrument cluster or ECU... If you know what you're doing then it can be quite cheap to code an extra key. What year is your car and does it have a digital clock or an analog clock on the dash ?

Hi. The keys I have are from my previous car which was a 2001 facelift model with a digital clock and my new car is the same model.

Not strictly true! Vag group have used the same type of transponder since around 1998 regardless of immo system type it's a megamos 48 rolling code transponder that locks to the vehicle after programming.
later vehicles mostly 2005 onwards use a megamos 48 Can chip that is prefixed with Vw, audi, skoda and seat data.
Again this will lock to the vehicle after use.
Pre 98 use a fixed code system that can be reused.
There are a few exceptions to the rule eg sharan and Alhambra that still used a fixed code till 2005.
So unless you know what your looking for its a minefield.
You can always use your old keys for parts!

Thanks for that info. Sorry if this sounds stupid but which bit can I use for parts as the keys are obviously no good and the other part is the immobiliser part so that won't work either. Do you mean just the casing and batteries?

Casing battery's and the remote should all be ok to reuse without hassle IF the part numbers match.

I have a broken key at the moment and couldn't afford to get the key coded and i needed two keys so ive tapped the chip from the old key out of site under the cowling so both key work no hassle ,but if someone black boxed my car or hotwired it would start but I cant see somene guessing i had done it.

Probably not but if your car does for some reason go missing your insurance will be asking some serious questions.

I don't think the insurance company would realise to be honest. They wouldn't know to look would they? If the car was stolen then recovered they would see the hot wiring and then just assume the thief had got round the immobiliser in some way. Also, on an older B5 you're not talking a huge value either not like a new car so less if a risk. Just my opinion of course, other opinions just as valid :)

I paid £400 for a4 1.9tdi avant x reg with 155k on it and 4 months t&t, wouldn't be worth claiming if it went missing my premium would probably double, i see your point but as above I dont think they would be smart enough to notice. whats the chance of someone picking my car very slim as long as I don't go shouting about it ont he internet ! oh whoops

Yes, as long as you don't tell anyone, especially on the internet, you'll be ok ;)
