View Full Version : Changing cv joint / gaiter

Hi, Last weekend I changed the outer front off-side cv gaiter on my Passat 2001 130bhp 1.9tdi and I would like to share my experience for the benefit of others.

Before starting I searched all the forums and was of the opinion that I would have to remove the top king-pin joint which is usually rusted in solid (mine was). The alternative was to drop one of the lower wishbones using an 18mm spanner. I was rather annoyed to find I didnt possess this as all my tools were Ford based (yes I finally got rid of the Scorpio) so some lateral thought was required.

In the end I undid the inner spline bolts connecting the driveshaft to the gearbox and by lifting the shaft upwards I was able to withdraw the driveshaft out of the hub without any problem. I was then able to deal with the CV joint.

All in all the whole job took me less than two hours with coffee breaks so my rusted bolts can wait for another day. And yes, I have now bought an 18mm spanner!

Hi, I am just about to replace the same gaiter on my 1998 110 bhp 1.9TDi Passat, thanks for the info it will make the job much easier. What great timing, as I have just joined the forum, I hope that I may be able to contribute in the future.

PS. I have also parted company with my Scorpio, miss the comfort but not the visits to the petrol station, (2.9 V6 efi) nuff said!!

Glad this has been of use. When changing the cv gaiter this way there were a couple of issues I became aware of:

The first is to take care that you dont damage the ABS sensor when you remove the shaft. Some people suggest that you disconnect the sensor but I didnt want to disturb the electrics.

The second is that when you knock the cv off the shaft you will see a plastic sleeve and a concave shaped washer. It is important to make sure that these go back the same way so make a note of their orientation.

If I were doing this again I would have bought more cv grease and checked out the inner joint at the same time!

Looks great advice - do you think this would work on the nearside? I have a 99 passatt with all the classic signs (used to have a golf with the exact same problem). I once tried to change the cv gaiter on the offside and got as far as trying to unseize the bolt on the top suspension joints - and too found it impossible to shift - did consider WD40 and belting seven bells of ***** out of it but knew that would **** the bolt up.

Incidentally, if you read the Haynes manual, it says remove the top suspension joint bolt and then discard - don't say why discard, but I guess doctor Haynes had the self same problem :aargh4:

Eventually I had the garage do it and they said it had been a real bitch :biglaugh: so got my £120 worth anyway
