Hi, I've just recently bought an Audi A4 1.9tdi B5 Avant on an X reg that has started to judder/shudder when trying to pull off. It's kind of like the car wants to stall, but I don't think it has anything to do with the engine. It shakes loads unless you let the clutch out very slowly. It's fine once driving apart from a tiny bit of vibration after putting your foot down on the throttle after changing gear. It's still good on fuel, has plenty of power and the clutch is not slipping.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT IT COULD BE?
The car was hard to get into gear when I first got it, you couldn't change quick between first and second. I have also had an intermittent ABS/ASR problem since I bought it but i don't think this has anything to do with it. I have scanned it and it gave me code 00283 which is the wheel speed sensor, ABS sensor or something that effect. I will investigate tomorrow when I have the chance to jack it up but I thought I'd mention it anyway just in case.
I would appreciate any help or ideas, had a little search but couldn't see anything that sounded quite right. Thanks

What mileage is on the car? Sounds like the flywheel

155,000 on it and no service history at all.

Ya id say go get a mechanic to drive it and see because the flywheels are known to give trouble from as early as 60 - 70 thousand miles

I would investigate the ABS fault as the fault could cause the the engine ecu to back the fuel off, as if the ASR was active.

Just put a clutch kit in (my ex) the father in laws 1.8. On me back on the driveway! Getting to old for all that, but a straight forward job.

When I got too old for that I started pulling the engine :)

Got to agree with Doctle Odd. One good thing about these cars is the speed and relative ease with which you can whip the engine out, with or without the transmission attached. Unlike many tranverse layouts. Fiat coupe take a bow!

Aaaahhhh mechanic porn, is there any better kind :D

Anyway, back to the OP. Why wont the car start? Electrical gremlins or engine gone bang?
What engine code is it?
