Ok, so my wife's Passat ( 53 ) 1.9 Tdi Highline's rear park assist has been out for a while, time to get it sorted.....

On start up there's the usual tell tale 10 second long beep signalling the system is faulty, then nothing.

Performing the basic test of ignition on and car in reverse gear, I listened to each sensor and sure enough 2 were ticking merrily away and 2 were not, so I began checking prices......

Dealers were fantastic, no stock and 2-3 days to get them in and prices ranging from £80 - £100 each and that was UNPAINTED!!

Not today thanks....lol

Also by the by I had a dealer mechanic I know who came out and checked diagnostics and also stated that 2 sensors were out.

Further he reckoned he could get them at around £70 each, but I said I would get them and started looking further afield....

I came upon these, not original I know but at £14.99 I went for 3 off and also ordered some paint as well to get them matching the car.

Paint code of LD5Q Shadow Blue £16.49 incl lacquer

Anyway, they arrived today and look great, just waiting for the paint to get here so I can do my thing and make them blue..

To sum up, I figured that at around £350+ to get VW to supply, paint and fit 2 new ones:scared::scared: I could get them removed and install a whole new system for around £200

So at a cost of £45 for 3 sensors ( 1 spare ) and paint at £16.49 + my mechanic said he'll fit them for £30 making a total of £91.49 I reckoned I'll give these a go!

I'll come back and advise if its a good saving and all is well or money down the drain.

Fingers crossed...:approve:

I would be interested to know how you get on Jim. I replaced a sensor a good few years ago which cost me around £70, after that another 2 failed. I didn't want to spend loads more money on it so I just live without the park assist now. I would definitely be interested in buying a couple at that price though if they work ok.

Hi Pete, of course I totally understand.

With all things non OEM I know its a risk, but I'm also aware of the sometimes huge margins added on and what can be the true cost at the start of the supply chain.

I work in the construction industry in sales for myself and have seen "Genuine" OEM parts sell for £2000

I can sell exactly the same part, from exactly the same supplier, using the exact same drawings and specs for perhaps £1600!!
The supplier I use has of course added their markup too, meaning that the true cost could maybe be around £1100.....some major difference!

Its a £90 gamble basically, but the guy has some good feedback, sold quite a few and they arrived very quickly, so we'll see

Once fitted whether they work all A ok or not I'll come back and report.......It may help yourself and a few others to get their rear parking aid sorted for much less.

That the result I'm looking for too.

I think there's loads of issues with these in general, but many are very wary of the cheap n cheerful Ebay parts..................we'll see I guess.

Ok, so paint arrived today and looks to be a good colour match.

I'm on with painting them and will see how they turn out / fit / work etc and report back either way............

Hi guys,
just a quickie as I'm up to my eye balls in my new car at the moment :approve:

Parking sensors as mentioned above were bought and received. I painted them using the paint as above too, giving them 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of paint and 2 coats of lacquer...........PERFECT MATCH

I had them fitted last night and the sytem is now back working A ok again, so all good.

Hope it helps some of you moving forward.

Good luck

A bit off topic but can parking sensors be retrofitted to a car that doesn't have them at all? Dont need any fancy display just a beeper, my sharans a bit of a pig to reverse park.

I have just fitted 2 of these sensors yesterday and they work fine, they cost me £14.99 each including vat and delivery and I got some spray paint mixed up locally which is a perfect match. They only took me around 30 mins to fit the pair.
