View Full Version : Satnav Gone Bonkers

Greyanglia

Last night I went to pickup Mrs Greyanglia from an unfamiliar address in Tunbridge Wells and thought I would use the satnav - I have the Technology Pack. Weirdly it identified my location as somewhere in South -East London when I was actually between Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells.

It tracked me along a a dead end road and then I sailed across the River Thames, went up the A13 and according to the Satnav became imprisoned in the Ford works at Dagenham!

i thought I'd stop the car, get out, lock it and wait a few minutes before rebooting it but it made no difference and it has still gone off on one today.

All suggestions for a fix greatly received or should I head for the nearest Dealer?

GPS antenna has maybe failed. Seems quite a common problem with a few of you on here having the same issue.

Thanks for the quick reply, Chris.

Sounds like a warranty fix although disappointing if this is a bit of a common fault.

father's doing something similar; when he's down in south wales, loses connection, says destination is 1000's of miles of away and time to destination is like 20 odd hours away. When he had it serviced before Christmas, he told Bradford Audi and they couldn't fault it. He's got the bog standard RMC Nav but im guessing its the same antenna.

I've got it booked in on 31st Jan so I will let you know how I get on.

gps aerial is failing on nearly all roof mounted 2012 onwards models, seeing a fair few now we carry them in stock

Is it just A6's that are being affected or the whole model line up?

Wish they would do something about the pronunciation, the lady in mine struggles to say certain words,"lane" becomes a strange liliane, that's just one of many words she struggles with,my old 2005 a4 satnav was far superior to this one in the a7.

Try living in wales and listen to it say place names with no vowels! Quite amazing sometimes!

Hahaha,to be fair that's quite understandable as I think everyone struggles with that, just think that the basics should be correct in such a technological car but some of this technology seems to be a backward step.

All sounds a bit disappointing. Is it a quick fix as it is a bit of a pain to leave it with the dealer for a whole day tomorrow even if it gets a complementary clean?

ps. I am currently cruising the Channel off the Isle of Wight in my amphibious Allroad!

Just had mine replaced - took quite a while - they had to paint the aerial to colour then a couple of hours to fit.

Quick Update - new GPS aerial supplied and fitted by the dealer. All fine now but clearly a 'known' problem in case anyone has the same problem.

Thanks to everyone for their input!

Mines packed up today, had me about 30 miles south of home. Booked into the dealer on Tuesday, hopefully a quick fix, ie replacement of the antenna. Disappointing thing is they will update the software, so steering will be screwed shortly.

they will need your vehicle for 2 days, new aerial needs painting plus its roof lining out to replace

you can decline 48k8 recall if you wish

Yes they said I could decline it, as long as I sign a disclaimer. They also said that if anything connected with the update then failed I wouldn't be covered. Problem is they said they didn't know what was updated. On the basis I know it's steering related I'm not willing to risk any later warranty issues with it.

They didn't mention needing the car for two days, in fact they won't have it that long because I need it. Surely they can identify the fault, order the part and spray it then call the car back in for fitting. It's solid black so maybe not a problem.

See how we go on Tuesday I guess.

Weel today my A5 3.0 TDI became an amphibious vehicle as apparently i was sailing in the english channel. They didn't tell me the car could do water as well? Anyway i went straight to the Audi garage in exeter and the only booking i could get is in 8 days time. After reading this forum and thread i am disgusted with Audi as this is clearly not an issue that is going away and i fully intend to lay all this at their feet when i take the car in to be mended. They haven't said anything about repair time or anything just that i bring it in on the day. if they have to take the roof lining off to replace the GPS they they better do an excellent job as i brought this car from brand new so i expect it back in perfect condition. Can any of you guys who have had this repair done say anything about the repair IE was it completed o time and any issues afterwards? Thanks in advance. Now i will continue to row my way back to the english coast and find a landing point.

Do let us know what that particular dealership charges for courtesy car insurance waiver, not sure anyone on here has been there before.

Oh, and stand your ground on paying it, tell them to shove it, although it sounds like you're in the right mood to do that already.

I know but it's not what I expect of an almost brand new Audi. If this is a normal occurance what else can I expect to go next?? I would not have known anything about the possible repairs they will do if I had not looked it up on this forum.

The car is under warranty, don't worry about any repairs.

Every cars have their faults, Audi aren't excluded you know. Some cars (all makes) can have problems from day 1 they leave the showroom.

You're asking a lot to have a fault free car!

It always seems to go wrong at precisely the time you need it most lol. I shall be using my iPhone to navigate up north next week staying clear of any water lol. Thanks for the advice.

Really? Nothing? Not even a charge to waive insurance on a courtesy car which is what we were talking about?

Chris & Whippy, you may not have been asked to pay for it, but dealerships DO and WILL attempt to extract money from a customer for allowing you to borrow a car whilst they repair the one supplied by the manufacturer they represent.

That's the money he's talking about, that's the money he's saying he won't be giving to them. And more power to him for that.

I've never paid to waive insurance excess at my local dealer. Never been asked to either.

My car was off the road for 3 days whilst they fixed this as despite k owing where the fault is, they have to start at the MMI and work backwards. Fortunately I commute on the train every day, so it wasn't the end of the world.

I have had numerous Audi group cars and they have all gone wrong at some stage, but it's how it's fixed that matters to me, and there has never been a problem, other than washing it when I said not to.

I guess if you have had a problem then you have an axe to grind, but there are thousands of Audi owners that may well not have experienced issues like you have had.

I guess if they want to charge you to keep you mobile while they fix a faulty car, then go elsewhere, but to me the important thing is fixing the car.

Name the dealer. Yes I do have an axe to grind, the problem we've had have been numerous, but this has nothing to do with it.

Taunton Audi, £1000 excess unless you pay them £15.
Bristol Audi, can't recall the amount of excess, same £15 to waive it.
Bath Audi, £1000 excess, £15 to waive it.
Swindon Audi, again, can't recall the excess, didn't even let the guy finish telling me how much it was to waive it.

Those are facts.

If you go in to a dealership blinkered, there is a HIGH probability that they will attempt to charge you this fee. It is Manager's discretion and the waiver can and has been waived. As has been demonstrated on this very forum to at least one other member who managed to get it removed.

I'm telling the OP to watch out for it, everyone else can frankly keep their opinions to themselves about it unless it's happened to them. And as you state yourself, "I've never paid to waive insurance excess at my local dealer. Never been asked to either." which to me means you are not qualified to give a warning to the OP.

Exeter Audi is part of the Marshall Group, who own Taunton Audi where they do/did operate the £1000 excess.

Sorry, to take this off topic , but did you finally manage to get your issues resolved? I believe it was Swindon who were the latest to get their paws on your car?

I don’t know if I will be asked by my local (Glasgow) dealer, but I’m more concerned they don’t say anything and let me drive the courtesy car away with a £1000 excess so I will have to ask even if it gives them the opportunity to charge. Unfortunately the Lomand Group own all the dealerships in the surrounding area.

I will also check with my insurance to see if I’m covered for more than just third party… I doubt it, but no harm in asking.

I believe so. They had it for week and got most of it sorted. They said there's an upcoming software update to fix the intermittent screen pop-up issue that others have experienced, but then that's the kind of thing they may say to get someone out of their hair for a bit. Not heard anything else from them on that. There was the black comedy about the sensor (which I still haven't actually looked at since they said it was damaged and then wasn't) but all appears fine. Think the squeak might be coming back, but that's for another thread when confirmed. I'm the catalyst to things going wrong on the car as I think we all decided, so I've been avoiding it.

Wife's been using the sunroof without issue, but then it was fine for over a year and a half before it was "serviced" by Bristol Audi and promptly stopped working the next time the sun came out, so it ought to be fine.

Decision is that the car will have to go before the warranty runs out as it's too unreliable to consider keeping after that time, but there's a year left on it so will continue using it I guess.

Price has dropped again according to WBAC, now down to £19,500, so it might almost be a disposable item by the time the warranty runs out.

Back on topic again.

Taunton Audi - who caused the problems in the first place - were the first to give me the excess warning, was like a sales pitch, you know, like you do when you hire a car and don't take the damage excess waiver and they break you down to buying it. So I refused, took the car with the £1k excess, drove it back up the M5 scared witless of anything happening and left it on the drive, then timidly drove it back to them a few days later when they'd finished botching my Wife's 2 month old car.

I should also say, Swindon Audi were the best service of all of them to date, presumably as they were the supplying dealer. I could hear the smiley voice crack on the phone when he started talking to me about the excess. He got it good and understood fully.

Milton Keynes Audi for me. Also been very good with the courtesy cars I've had depending on what was available. So if no standard A3 something else, had a convertible A5 and A4's.

Of course they may just never have told me about the excess

Exactly like courtesy cars were in the olden days. Now it's a struggle to even get one sometimes. You have to sign a form I believe, so I'm guessing that at the discretion of the Manager it was waived.

Too sales focused, relying too much on the reliability of the product and not having enough in reserve to back up the customer once you're out the door - had to wait a week to get a car into a dealership with a sunroof that wouldn't close properly. Unreal.

That is outrageous, I'll give you that. Two days from reporting my sat nav fault to it being in the garage. Granted I didn't need a car, otherwise I would have had a wait, I'm sure.

Common issue. Had the same with my old CC. Just get a gps antenna on eBay for 20£ or so and connect it to the head unit instead of the original one, 5 minute job. You can leave it attached underneath the dashboard where the head unit cables are.

Edit: it’s actually 6£ [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

The plastic frames just pops out if you use some plastic tools. Then unscrew 4 screws and unit slides out. There is a plenty tutorials on google on how to remove VW Passat/CC head unit.

You can also try VW CC forum section....

Today my car had the same issue, the position was lost in a very bright, sunny day. Apart from this, the system works fine. Tried the factory reset for the Navigation settings, but I had no success. Is there any "hard reset" for the GPS/NAV, or any check to see what's the problem?

I also wish to ask, is the above mentioned "additional GPS" works for an A6, or it's for a VW only solution?

UPDATE

Today I figured out, that the compass is also wrong, showing approximately, and continous 90° distort from the real North position. I tried to check for the fuse, but haven't found the proper one for the NAV or the GPS antenna in the user manual. I tried to check for the avaible SAT number, but I haven't found the "number of satellites" in any menu. I knew it existed in my former C6 menu, but I can't find it in my current 3G+ MMI. Also, I tried a hard reset by removing the battery temporary, but I didn't found it in the trunk.

Can you help me out with the above issues?

Just change the antenna. They suffer from water ingress and this then leads to the module stating open circuit.

I couldn't figure out how to read the number of signals in my 3g+ without entering the engineering mode of the mmi
