View Full Version : Illuminated Central Storage Compartment: Who's got one?

I have the Full LED Ambient Lighting Package; QQ2 (£520 cost if you please) ; providing lights on door handles: sill guards etc etc. I see references in the Audi Brochure, and in various threads in the forum; to 'illuminated central storage compartment (the sliding door one I assume?) My issue is that I don't have this on my car; so am wondering if I have defective light somewhere. Can someone provide more details on the illuminated cubby?? If confirmed; I will go back to my dealer and request clarification on an extra that I have paid for; but don't seem to have fitted. Thanks in anticipation.

Sliding door central storage? Mine is a lift up lid in the armrest. There is a sliding door on the cup holder if that's what you mean? As far as I can remember none of these are illuminated, although there are lights under the door armrests...

Eddo: thanks for response. Sliding cubby in front of gear stick? Car is a 2014 BE Manual. Paid extra for all the fancy lights which are great by the way. Just trying to figure if I have one missing; or a defective one.

My car is non smoking version; hence I Thot the sliding door cubby was a storage compartment. While on subject; I dont think I have a compartment in the actual armrest itself; or I haven't found how to open it?. (Not talking about the MMI cable compartment under the armrest etc)

Think the light comes from arround the accessory socket (red ring)

So it may be the red ring around the power socket that is the 'illumination' ? Which is a bit lame.

Yep, It's a bit poor. To be honest the brochure is not very clear on what you get and what the differences between standard and the 2 pack levels are. I would still have got it just for the LED strip lights down the doors and the lights in the outside door handles though.

Yeah I'm happy with the light package generally. It raises the car etc and people notice the extras. I went for the full Led headlights also which are also conversation starters; don't see many cars with them. A proper illuminated cubby would just have topped it off (joking joking)

I like the look of the LED headlights but they'll need to come down in price before i can justify the extra cost, i'm from Yorkshire :)
Some Seat's have them as standard so there's a chance it will start to become more common, remember, it's not so long ago when Xenons were new and expensive. I had them on an Omega MV6 about 20yrs ago, they were the future.

Are you saying that on the A7 there are in effect 2 compartments under the armrest, one which is accessed by lifting the padded part of the armrest that contains the AMI or 3.5mm port and the 12v power socket and a second one above that within the padded section of the armrest requires the release of a catch on the print of the armrest? If so then my A6 definitely does not have the second one

Interestingly, my friends A6 BE has a first aid kit in the rear armrest, which the A7 does not.

Indeed and the brochure makes it sound like the armrest in the A6 and the A7 are the same, clearly they are not. All A6s get the first aid kit in the rear armrest, A7 drivers seem to have to part with £30 for the privilege.

It's actually worse than that. The A7 doesn't even have the space to fit the First Aid kit!
I guess these cars are all built to a number, and first aid kits obviously got binned in order to cover some cost elsewhere in the A7....probably that 2nd Armrest compartment!

Ah right, the first aid kit sits in the main compartment. Think that front plastic bit is reserved for the cup holders when the storage pack is specced.

The front part of the compartment which is blocked is probably reserved for retractable cup holders, i had them in A4 B7 back arm rest but in C7 it is blocked. i could not found an option to have those, though they would be never used if I have that.

The cup holders are part of the storage package, they fit in the front area of the back armrest; where it's blocked off.

OK so my allroad has the two stage compartments in the front armrest... if you pull the armrest up there is the cubby with the AMI and 12v outlet. Push the armrest down and there is a catch on the front that allows the top of the armrest to be lifted and you have a nice additional storage area in there (pretty sure my A6 C6 was the same but the space 'under' the armrest was less generous).
In the back I have the first aid kit in the 'back' of the armrest and the cup holders in the front.
So... I think the difference might simply be down to the storage pack option... it's standard equipment on the allroad...

Groucho: The plot thickens: Is your Allroad an A6? : I specced the Storage Pack In my A6 BE (cup holders in rear; first aid kit etc) but I do not have the two staged compartments in the front armrest. Have I been shortchanged on the storage options?? Should I go back to the dealer on this? This irks me because I was kind of thinking that the available storage in the front is a bit limited etc even with the under seat bins .

Have to disagree with you there! It may not have all the gizmos as big brother but it's still pretty tough off tarmac. I had a lot of fun with mine under a variety of conditions in the many countries it visited. Even though I love my A6, I still miss the A4 Allroad!

I have the storage pack in my car but the armrest only has the single compartment where the AMI connector is located, unlike my previous A6 which had the 'hidden' compartment in the armrest itself as well, so I don't think you're missing anything. My car was built towards the end of June/beginning of July last year.

No offense intended.:)
My brother has driven one in the US (where he lives - and it is the only offering), he's also driven mine. He has an S4 right now and quite enjoyed the allroad (A4) but having been in mine I think he would swap the S4 for a BiTdi A6 allroad... but not the A4 allroad.

gmonster, I'm currently driving a 2012 Swiss A6 Avant Quattro, which is specced similarly to an Allroad but without the cosmetic bits. It's quite highly specced and I think that the storage pack is part of the Ambition package.
Previously I had a French A4 Allroad which also had the top ambition spec and many other extras. This also had the similar folding armrest with storage compartment. I think that there are sometimes large differences between cars in different markets.
I'm quite sure that the French A4 Avant 2.0 TDI that I had briefly as a company car also had the centre armrest with storage compartment. This car also had a high spec apart from the engine!
in fact, I'm pretty sure that all my Audis have had the same armrest, including a 2004 A4 Cabrio and a 2005 A3 2.0 Tfsi.

Groucho,
My C7 Allroad 245 was built a month before yours so I think it is a 2013 model. Out of interest did a powered tailgate come as standard?
Mine has got most of the goodies but not this which together with a DAB radio I gather was just about the only difference between 2013 and 2014 models.
ukgroucho

Greyanglia,
Yes I have powered tailgate and DAB. I was going to pay for those two options (had power tailgate on my C6 3.0 TDi quattro and regretted not having DAB). Anyway I ended up geting them included in the price :)

Groucho,
Thanks I did think that was the case. I looked at a gleaming new Phantom Black Allroad with a powered tailgate in the local showroom and could not believe the price of it with all the extras! Fortunately I found a near identical model 6 months old at a different dealer which was still painful although I've got over the price as we absolutely love it. About the only thing I did not check was the tailgate which of course I missed by a month.
I got the DAB with the Tech Pack which works well although I find the controls a little clunky at times eg not being able to show the track playing on the radio without fiddling through the menu is a bit of a pain but overall no gripes.

Hi All,
I've a 11plate SE Quattro Saloon with the Ambient lighting pack.
Just had a look and the Cigarette lighter is outlined in red so I think that's it - agree its a bit lame.
Rest of the lighting pack is nice though - mine was 2nd hand with a lot of extras so not sure if I'd have paid for it against some other choices - even if it has spoilt me for future cars - just enjoying it whilst I have it.

Oh on the current and last x2 A6 saloons I had (C6 Sline / C6 SE) they both had the same split Armrest as my C7.
Shallow storage compartment in the top opened by latch at front (part of the armrest).
& if you lift all of the armrest a deep compartment underneath for storage where the Cigarette lighter socket is for power & AMI in the C7.

C6 Sline was 57 plate, C6 SE was 59 I think - both saloons and both had it - my C7 is a saloon and think the black edition bi-turbo avant I had whilst mine was getting its brakes changed had one. It was a good weekend and made me feel good about my fuel economy to almost see the needle going down in the Bi-Turbo.
Maybe it's an A6 v A6 Allroad thing.

OK slightly off topic but... Maybe that is a bit "unfair" 'cos I'll suggest that you may have been exercising a bit more enthusiasm with the throttle :) My BiTdi can be 'quite' frugal (certainly compared to my old C6 3.0 Tdi), but if you get your foot into it then it certainly drops the MPG significantly. I guess that will be one of the characteristics... if you use the power then you inevitably have to burn a lot more fuel - laws of physics.
Having said all that I have seen some wildly different MPG figures posted by BiTdi folks on here. May be down to driving style or maybe the engines vary a bit.

After driving 10miles home from the dealership, with windows down for a good bit (seduced by the noise) I had to check the boot plate to confirm if it was a BiTurbo beast.
For the comparison they were both loaded fairly similar with 20" Rotors on both - my driving style may have been enhanced for the first weekend but I was cruising as normal for rest of week (they had to get brake pads from Germany as non in UK - for once not bothered!)
The BiTurbo only had a couple of thousand miles on it so that may have made a difference given the Quattro had about 38k but I was getting around 350/375 out of a tank on the BiTurbo rather than the 425/450miles I get out of the 245ps with similar driving styles on both once I'd had a play - mainly motorway miles on cruise control with about 10miles of London stop/start at the end of the journeys.
Turns out next car will have ACC - so used to it now it's really annoying not to have it, HUD was nice and I'd probably go for that over the NightVision.
Oh in fairness the BiTurbo was an Avant and my Quattro is a saloon.
ukgroucho
17-01-2014, 01:25 PM
I get 470 to 500 out of a tank.. projected is slightly over that when I am doing motorway runs (525 or better). It's a 75l tank so that equates to 407 / 433 and a projected best case of 455 with a 65l tank. allroad BiTdi so 'avant'.
BigAid
17-01-2014, 02:57 PM
I suspect there's a slight difference in driving styles and the weight of crap I'm usually carrying around then :-) - they were both on 65ltr tanks.
I used to get 450 a tank from the 57' 2.0ltr Sline and 650 from the 09' 2.0ltr SE (130 Eco model) so just shows the differences in engine tech - They both had 70ltr fuel tanks unlike the standard 65ltr on the C7 - but that was in the good old days when it wasn't my depreciation and a fuel card - after doing 50k in 2years I'm really missing the not my depreciation part!

Thanks for all the responses on this. I agree that the extra armrest storage would make a difference; as I feel the available storage is a little bit limited. I use a small hard drive for all my music needs and it tends to dominate the single armrest cubby. If I didn't have the converted ashtray for storage use; and with my tendency to use the cup holder for loose coins etc; I would be severely miffed with the storage options. The under seat bins are useful but small. So: the way ahead; I tend to try and stay away from dealers but will investigate/query this issue next time i am in.

Are you sure you don't have the double armrest cubby? Lift the armrest up all the way and have a look. I'm sure it should be there. Again it's not massive but enough to pop a couple of sunglasses etc in.

Double armrest storage is more than just a cubby for sunglasses.. it's a sizeable area as big as (or bigger than) the one UNDER the armrest. I keep sunglasses (backup set) coins, some mints etc. in there and there is plenty of spare room.. it would easily house a couple of external HDDs also (although not a place to kepp them if you wantthem plugged into AMI cos the cable would have to trail out and down and would probably stop the armrest closing).
I'll try to remember to take a couple of pics tomorrow.
And yes I have the little storage areas under the seats.. pretty limited but I guess you just need to find the right thing to store there.. maybe an LED torch with long life batteries (wrapped in a cloth or a backup beanie hat for emergency use and to stop the torch from rattling around).

I picked it up on 25th July. I can't remember exactly when it was built but it would've been late June or early July. It's definitely MY14 (got DAB and the updated tech pack).
Neil.
Same here, definitely MY 2014 and no split arm rest. Not too bothered though, just more space to get cluttered.

Could it be something to do with the deluxe 4 zone A/C? Otherwise it seems hit and miss as to whether you get it or not. I just have the standard A/C

I love a good mystery....
I got my A6 black edition beginning of Jan and it has the split arm rest.
I have the £220 version of lighting pack and storage pack and tech pack and rear camera and heated seats. (Should be with the storage pack eh?) I wonder if you kicked up enough fuss at a dealer (if you didn't get the split arm rest but had storage pack added) they might swap it gratis?
Does everyone have the twin 12v sockets below the air vents in the back. I only knew they were there because my inquisitive wife spotted them. Don't ask why she was in the back though :-))))

Pumpsmy: I got the 500 quid. Light pack! Got the storage pack also; and yes spotted the twin 12v sockets in rear passenger cabin. Planning a visit to dealer to talk armrests.

Picked my Avant BE today. £220 lighting pack. No tech pack but various other bits and bobs. No lights in the central compartment, but I do gave the split storage space.

Mine is a MY2014 S-Line, no storage pack that I am aware of or lighting pack. I have the split arm rest as per pics on page 7 and I always assumed this was standard spec. The only lighting is the red power outlet bezel in the lower box but it works ok to plug in phones/ iPods to the AMI.

Great idea with the aerosol top, going to rob one now
Mine, a 2012 has no light in centre storage and I have 220 quid light pack
Seems everything I paid for as an extra is now standard, auto boot on avant, dab, big wheels etc
Great car to drive, very smooth

I have the twin 12v outlets in the back but wondered if it was part of the 4 zone climate or rear heated seats... once they do the plumbing for the 4 zone climate adding rear heated (in addition to front heated) is quite cheap so i wondered if "once they have the loom live back to that point" they add extra power outllets.

Groucho: Pretty clear from the brochure that the storage pack brings the twin 12v sockets in rear: You must have storage pack etc.

Sorry to drag up an oldish thread but did we ever establish what option/pack prompts the split armrest?

I think it seems to be the luck of the draw, whatever was in the parts bin.

Mr Suzanne Tomas has one in his, luck of the draw. Taunton Audi wrote to him/her at this address today to offer some tat or other. Absolutely no idea where they were going on that name.

Yeah. Sorry I was going to take this issue to the dealers; but never got round to it. Didn't manage to get to stage of linking dual storage to any standard book option. Seemed to be down to luck; which is mad in this day and age.

Well according to Audi Customer Care (via twitter) it is standard on the A6. I've questioned whether that is accurate though, given my MY14 FrankenCar does not have it.

The 63 plate SE Saloon I had at the start of the month whilst mine was being serviced didn't have one - It had the Lid only armrest.

My car has the twin storage compartment but I don't have the storage pack. Don't know if it's illuminated though, never looked. I will now though! :D

I think the overall conclusion on the illumination was that the only illumination provided is from the ring around the power socket and all cars have that regardless of whether they have the lighting and/or storage pack. What happens if you specify the smoker pack which sees the power socket become a lighter in the front storage compartment under the AC controls is anybody's guess as no one seems to have taken that option

Not all sunglasses are the same. May I refer you to the case involving Hilton, P Miss vs. Audi U.S.A. and how her oversized, face covering stupid glasses wouldn't even fit in the trunk of an A6 Avant?
Some or all of this is made up.

I'm surprised that even a pair of sun-glasses fit in them and they aren't rubber lined so possible scratching/rattling! More like a packet of mints, but then you'd be annoyed at them rolling around!
Mine fits my normal specs in a hard Specsavers case (which I keep there for emergency use in case I have issues with my contact lenses) and also a pair of sunglasses in a soft case. I have to put them in in order to get the thing to close, but it works fine. Both sets of glasses are protected by their respective cases. ]

To be honest I did only have a quick look the other night when I was checking out the centre storage compartment and I guess I was expecting them to be bigger so I'm probably being a bit harsh!
