My 2011 A3 has an Ipod connection in the glove box. I do not have an Ipod. Is there any way that I can convert this to something more useful (to me) like a USB connector so hat I can use USB sticks / disks?

Wonderful. Just bought one. Do I need to reconfigure the radio or does it just know its not talking to an Ipod any more?

No reconfiguration needed, these cars are smart :p
Just go into MEDIA as normal with the USB stick attached, press SOURCE and select USB from the menu.
