Hi everyone

I had a thought, for anything that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket, would it be possible to splice the wires of it straight into the wires that go into the back of the socket? Would there be any risk of doing that?

Your device wired into it would need to be fused but no big issue. I did it for my car cradle

Hi, thanks for replying so fast :)

Im a beginner at these things, I havent even got a car yet :biglaugh: But I expect to get a Mk5 1.6 in the coming months.

How would I go about putting a fuse into the circuit?

EDIT:

Could I use one of these?: Add-a-Circuit Fuse Holders (http://www.co-star.co.uk/range/363/fuseholders-&-fuses/add-a-circuit-fuse-holders.html)

Seems simple enough, provided I can get a wiring diagram from somewhere to find an auxiliary powered circuit.

One thing I dont understand though, I assume that the red positive wire from the device goes into the fuse box though the add-a-circuit, but then where would the black wire go?

Sorry for asking lots of questions

EDIT 2 : I assume the installation is the same as this? How to Hard Wire Your Radar Detector - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2D4EizMUhsk)

If it is, it looks easy enough. Just crimp on one of those ring connectors to the other wire, connect it to a ground source and crimp the red wire into the fuse tap?

Add-a circuit is a very simple but ideal to get another fused supply.
1) choose an ignition switched fuse, or a constant live fuse (if this is what you want)
2) pull the fuse you have chosen, replace it with the add-a circuit, replace the fuse you have pulled into the correct slot on the add-a-circuit
3) place a fuse in the slot left and you will have a live feed on the red tail switched or unswitched depending on your choice of location. (ensure the fuse rating is lower than the feed fuse)

Thanks, I think i've got that down now. I just have one more question, is there a space next to the fuse box to push cables towards the centre like where the stereo and things are without having to remove lots of extra panels under the steering wheel?

You should not have any problem it is a little bit fiddly because of all the bits and pieces you have to get around.
Easy way is to have a semi-flexible rod, feed it through to the radio bit, tie a string to it and carefully pull it back. Ty the cable to the string and pull it back to the radio bit

BTW, is it possible to get a spare tray like this one?

I'm considering drilling a hole in it to get a USB cable through, and if I do that I dont want to do it on the original. Where can I get a spare one of these? I've tried looking on eBay, I searched for "golf mk5 dash tray" but I didnt get any listings for that.

Ive made a quick wiring diagram, there are 3 devices I want to wire up, a Connects2 box to get aux input, a regular micro usb cable to charge my phone and a Belkin bluetooth module, normally powered off the cigarette lighter. Here is the wiring diagram:

http://imageshack.com/a/img811/7057/9h0o.jpg

One question though, for the Belkin, is it ok to connect the ground to a screw on the stereo or do I have to connect it to a bolt in the car like for the voltage regulator? Im not sure because in my current car, a ford mondeo there is a ground loop issue where if a device is plugged into the aux port and also charging via the cigarette lighter, a lot of background noise is generated from the engine that comes out of the speakers. Thats why I thought if the aux Connects2 box and also the Belkin were grounded in the same place that would be better.

EDIT: Nevermind, solved. Thanks for the help guys :)
