Recently bought my first golf - which I love. (It's actually the first time I've ever spent more than £500/bought more than an eBay rust bucket that even webuyanycar won't buy in the end!)
However, unfortunately there was already a crack/hole in the body of the driver side wing mirror and the whole thing needs replacing.

I was wondering if anyone knew how easy that was to do? Or had any top tips? Or am I going to have to take it to a garage?
Can't find any helpful YouTube vids on the subject of changing the whole wing mirror unit in an MK6 unfortunately.

It's an electric, heated mirror, but not the kind that folds in automatically on locking the car.

Any advice gratefully received!

Welcome to the forum.

Is that a crack/hole in the painted top cover or the black bottom piece?

I removed the top cover easy enough there are video's on YouTube.

As Kieth has pointed out, most car mirrors have an outer plastic shell / cover on the back that covers all the electrics and workings.
on Christmas Eve I was parked outside work on the main road . On my return I found out someone had bashed the mirror on my Astravan and smashed the rear cover on my door mirror.
i went to the local vauxall dealer and ordered one! it came in on the second of January, £13 inc vat and fitted myself.
some covers are colour coded to the car, best bet is call at the parts dept and ask them which part you need, usually if they aren't busy they will pop out and have a look, then you are sure you get the correct part and colour ordered.
good luck.

Vauxall dealer are you sure?

Normally these covers come primed you can order them painted, there is a part number on the cover for buying a painted cover.

Thanks for your advice you two (not sure how to do a thanks on these threads yet!). Unfortunately the crack is in the main body of the unit - the bit behind the part that the mirror glass is in direct contact with (the plastic holding the mirror is also cracked) it meant that the top casing wouldn't attach properly and then flew off in the wind when I was trying the car on the motorway on a v windy day.

I have ordered a whole new unit from wingmirrorman.co.uk as they were cheapest after looking around. Just wondering how tricky it is to replace whole thing as I think the electrics may go right into the door, and haven't got any mechanics experience - though how hard can it be right??!!

My Astravan is a base model and doesn't have colour coded wing mirrors, so didn't need painting. I wasn't sure if the OP has black plastic or painted wing mirrors.
