hi
Just done an oil and filter change on my 1.9 tdi 130 all went well except that now its showing on dipstick as too full but sump is empty i.e nothing comes out if you remove plug . How long would it take to fill sump from empty time wise. Took 4 litres out and replaced with 3.5 litres so know it shouldn't be overfilled . Does the dipstick take level from sump or from oil cooler ??? Car now being left overnight with oil cap off ...

not quite sure what you mean, but i think you mean you have drained the sump, put 3.5 litres back in and now if you remove the sump plug, nothing comes out, yet the dipstick reads too much ? the dipstick goes into the sump, so if it reads too much then there is oil in the sump, presuming you are wiping the dipstick clean. you must be removing the wrong sump plug, or the threaded part is stuck in the sump.

I took the plug on the bottom of the engine out 7mm Allen key. Id expect the gearbox drain plug to be further back

Yes, it sounds like you've drained all the gearbox oil out and then put new engine oil in with the old engine oil causing it to be massively overfilled. I'm not sure on how to refill the auto box but don't drive the car until you have drained some of the engine oil out and replaced the gearbox oil.

Which gearbox oil did you drain, final drive or gearbox itself?

There is no such thing as an AZF box as you mentioned in your PM to me.

This reminds me of when I was a boy and my dad asked me to fill his Sherpa pickup engine with oil.About an hour later he came back and asked why I was still messing with it,
I had put 5 gallon in and it was nearly full to the top of the rocker cover.

Or when I was 10 and was bored at a relations (old geyser, fought in the war before the other one and got shot in the leg at some battle of Pashendale or somit, why would I be interested....:banghead:dohhhhh!:sad6: uncle Jim....) and went outside to clean the plugs on my mums 1970 Mini Coutryman, four years old and absolutely rotten through to the core inside and out, FOUR years old for Gods sake!

So said plugs removed, cleaned and gapped as instructed in my AA book of the road and re-installed. Leads put back on in any fashion I felt like, job done-simples. Hello nice Mr RAC man....

My money's on the diff (final drive) being empty!
though they normally take a splined socket to take the plug out...

Had drained gearbox but all sorted with new oil, double action pump some hosepipe with a bit of brake pipe inside to create an angle and a 4pint milk bottle . And a helpful missus to pump the oil into gearbox 😊 but won't be making the same mistake again

If only id put the same amount of thought in making sure i took the right plug out in the first place as to inventing the pump contraption

Hmmmmmm, not my method but should work. I fill them up with the stated amount for the box and then run the engine until the box is at 35 degrees and then take out the level plug and allow to drain until stops, hopefully before 40 degrees.

On the bright side you have changed more fluids than you would have done!

That bodes well, this is the ELSA procedure

Replacing ATF

After draining ATF, fit a new sealing ring and tighten new drain plug to 40 Nm
Remove ATF inspection plug
Guide ATF filling unit in through an opening in deflector cap, taking care not to push deflector cap upwards out of position
Fill with ATF until ATF comes out of inspection hole
Screw ATF level plug in hand-tight
Move selector lever to “P” position
Start engine
Press brake pedal
Shift through all selector lever positions with vehicle stationary, leaving selector lever in each position for about 10 seconds
Move selector lever to “P” position
Bring ATF to test temperature of 35 °C to 45 °C
Remove ATF inspection plug from oil pan
If only a small amount of ATF comes out of the inspection hole when the engine is running, the ATF level is OK
If a large amount of fluid comes out, allow to drain before the temperature exceeds 45 °C
If no ATF drips out of inspection hole, fill with ATF until ATF flows out of inspection hole before the temperature exceeds 45 °C
An ATF level which is too low or too high will impair the function of the gearbox
Fit new sealing ring on ATF inspection plug and tighten to 80 Nm

Checking ATF level

Bring ATF to test temperature of 35 °C to 45 °C
Checking the ATF level when the ATF temperature is too low leads to overfilling
Checking the ATF level when the ATF temperature is too high leads to under filling
Both an excessive and an insufficient level hinders the function of the gearbox
Gearbox is not in emergency running mode and ATF temperature is not above approx. 30 °C
Selector lever at “P”, engine running at idling speed
All electrical consumers and air conditioner must be switched off
Remove ATF inspection plug from oil pan
If a small amount of ATF drips out of inspection hole ATF level is OK

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. Winnie
