Hi guys and gals and respectable vw guru's,
I have a lovely passat tdi 20ltr s, 2008. Estate in black. Its done 74k with full vag history. The time has come to do cambelt water pump etc. I am well capable of doing the job but time and the worry of big .
bills hitting me have caused me to go looking for a replacement vw.
So, back to the main dealer showing interest in a new polo 1.4 MATCH dsg. I love the passat dsg box. I nearly fell over when he offered me £4k as i still owe £6k to vag finance. He summed up a deal to get me out of jail but the overall cost is steep. So peeps, not that i wpould want you to make the decision for me, but i have to either do the nece.ssary on the passat and smoke it till it dies or take a thumping hit in the pocket. Advise from those in the know would be appreciated.
Regards

I take your point but...i love the polo...but a 4 year pdp at £259 a month then a whopping £5k to keep it makes that lovely little polo very expensive horse .

£4k for a 2008 in PX? He's trying to rip you off... Even Glasses Guide gives PX for my 2006 at £4800.
Suggest you give a cheery two fingered wave as you walk out the door

Dear RichardSEL, thanks for that. I have allowed the occasional rip off in the 3 year ritual before but on a rare occasion had a fair deal. I think its time to move away from the Wayside Jardine motors group. After dealing with them for almost 20 years its time to shop elswhere. I know there are deals out there, so the hunt is on for a sensible approach.

If yours is 2008 then the chances are that it's a CR engine instead of the troublesome PD (but check anyway), assuming it's a diesel, which you haven't told us. I've never spotted a CR engine problem here on the forum. Most of the big issues, like electronic parking brake were improved by then as well, so unless the car is giving you grief why not hold for a while? If you're handy enough to do a cambelt change you can deal with most of the things that might start to niggle eventually.
Otherwise, sell privately and wander into a dealer with a price from DriveTheDeal, tell them to match or you'll start ringing around. You should manage -12% without any problem, more if you're a haggler.
For the sort of numbers they are quoting you could get a little Audi or a small Merc, Fiesta, etc.
CORRECTION - I just checked on DtD and you could get -18% on a 1.4 Polo. Your dealer target should be -16% or better. Or......... why not buy through DtD?

Cheers Teflon, unfortunately, vw milton keynes tell me my car was built in June 07 so that would be the PD diesel. I had the injectors and loom done on recall and i cured the parking brake fault with a new switch. No engine issues so far so what is likely to go wrong with it? It doesnt gulp oil or smoke unless one floors the gas pedal. Unless there is a crock of doom lurking it may be wise to hold on for a while. Cheers.

what is your engine code ? that may be a deciding factor. in your boot under carpet on sticky label, on cam cover or service book.

Thanks for all your views, they are appreciated. I started work fixing Daimler buses with unbustable gardner diesels. Im not too proud to learn and some of you younger guys have been educating an old stager. These bkp engines are a riddle to me...Why oh why do they have problems with oil pumps and schoolboy errors in design??? .Anyway, nuff of my rant, in my earlier post i said i was well capable of changing a cam belt and having decided to keep the passat for a while i now read about problems with belt tensioner bolts busting just after replacing.
Is this still a current issue? Has the issue been resolved with a tougher bolt to replace. Sorry if its old news but i would probably cry if my engine blew up cos i'd done something bad. Guys, who does the best cam belt kit and is there a way of avoiding this very poor issue. I dont want to leave volkswagen as ive been loyal since my 3 new B2 estates but lately my mrs's old Merc makes me wonder.

There not all bad. I have had mine for 5yrs. In that time I have covered 70k. Its the most reliable car I have had. Apart from wear & tear its been ultra reliable.
Getting rid in March for another Vw, but a Golf this time. Hope it turns out to be as good as the Passat.
Unless yours starts to cost silly money I would keep it. The only reason mine is going is due to covering silly miles. It will have covered 115k by the time it goes.
I also have the similar quandary, I have a 2007 tdi Sport covered 134000 now and have issues with parking brake (works when it want to, more often than not flags up "parking brake fault". Recently started with issue where it won't start, dash board lights up with flashing glow plug(ecu issue), parking brake flashes and beeping plus message telling me to go to garage. I've taken it to local garage who having run diagnostic check, reported no error???
They believe it to be steering lock issue, but can't be sure as they have only seen similar issue with older models. They have quoted £170 to fix but obviously can't guarantee a fix. Mot and Tax due in March.
So the big question is it time to move on as peripherals now starting to fail, What would I expect for part ex?
Do I stick with VW or move on seen some lovely Insignia's less than 18 months with less than 10k for around £15k, for similar money would be looking at S spec passats but generally higher mileage
Thoughts would be appreciated.

Maybe the way forward is to fix its ills them back-trade for a low mileage 55 plate b5. Might even get a swap for a top spec version. Its in the mix for me cos i had a few and they were good cars and there are plenty around with good historys. My big concern is if we leave vw audi we leave the forum
Now that WOULD be a mistake.

To give you a benchmark to work with I shifted my 07 B6 BKP DSG Sport with 72k on about 6 mths ago for £4500 against a £10500 2 year old Insignia SRi Auto Nav with 36k on it at a multi franchise VX dealer,
I thought this to be outstanding money as I'd been offered 3K for it against a £12500 Superb at a Skoda dealer, £3400 against a £14000 Volvo S80 at a non Volvo dealer, it eventually went to the Bushe and made £4500 under the hammer and was last seen for sale as a private sale for £5500 on A/T some months ago,
TBH to the OP I felt like I'd escaped by getting shot of it, I also felt that £10500 vs £16000 on a like for like basis showed just how silly it is to buy a VW anyway, come selling time the Insignia will be worth £1500 less than the Passat but a a whole £5500 less to buy and £1500 better px on the last VW by going to a VX dealer instead of a VAG one,
They really are snobs in the showroom, I put my steelies on when I go to buy a car and generally dress like I ain't got enough to buy a car anyway, this is how I measure it....oh sir are you sure you are in the right place the old banger dealer is up the road, wham folding down have I got your attention yet sonny? lol.

@ AJA, be warned the Insignia is a bit more thirsty than the Passat about town, out on the motorway it's around 50mpg which iirc I never saw from my Passat under that use, not sure if the CR actually improves anything despite all the magnificent gov official figures.
