Need some urgent help please guys..... Just bought a brand new samsung s4 mini yesterday and spent 2 hrs today trying to get it connected with my high prep.sat nav system today....phone worked all ok with contacts etc..however could not get data connection at all.

Went to Audi garage in Crawley, the technician spent an hour with me trying to get rsap to work ...with no luck and then said that I need to put a SIM card in dash in order to get google earth to work !

I have read that the S4 works perfectly well in some of our cars ? So I phoned Audi UK and spoke to one of technical advisors and was told that the phone should give me full access and everything should work fully, however he asked what software version was on my new phone. I told him it Jellybean 4.2.2 and he said that this is the problem!

I would need the older version software...before 4. ....as this is what Audi tested in March 2012 !

So I said how can I go back to vodafone and say I want my new phone with an older software to work with my car....absolutely unbelievable ! I have gone from iPhone to latest samsung and still can't get this rsap to work?

Has anyone got an S4 with jellybean 4.2.2 working on their system or do I have to now get a samsung S3 with ice cream 4.0 to work ?

Please help as I'm now at my wits end !

many thanks

Thanks for this very helpful advice, it's very helpful indeed, but how would I know if the phone has rsap ? When I looked up specifications on phones they were exactly the same software & versions ? What should I look for & where ?

Also I have some articles on this forum saying 4.3 does not work & caused major problems with connection drop out etc? Have they cured this fault now ?

The MINI series do not have rSAP

Yes they do...

Samsung Galaxy S4 & S4 mini - Skoda Superb II - BRISKODA.net - The Skoda Forum and Community (http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/281734-samsung-galaxy-s4-s4-mini/?p=3345306)

And rsap is an Android feature these days, not a phone feature.

From wikipedia...

"Mobilephones with SAP/rSAP support[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bluetooth_profile&action=edit&section=34)]There are a huge amount of mobile phones who offer support for SAP/rSAP. As of today, all mobile phones which work under unmodified Operating Systems such as Android (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_operating_system), Maemo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maemo), MeeGo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MeeGo) or Windows Phone 7 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Phone_7) should have SAP/rSAP support. NB Apple iOS does not support rSAP."

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 which I know does have rSAP. I check to see if the S4 mini has rSAP and from the information I can find, I believe that the S4 mini also supports rSAP.

I did fine when linking the phone to the car there are two ways in which to make the connection - either get the phone to search for the car or get the car to search for the phone - the latter I believe gives the option for the rSAP connection

Try the following...

1) Delete any Bluetooth connection in the car
2) Switch Bluetooth off on the phone - wait a min and then switch back on
3) In the car switch on bluetooth visibility on the phone
4) Search for bluetooth device from the car (i.e. dont search for a bluetooth device from the phone)
5) The car should find your phone and list it - select your phone from the menu and you will get a message about a pin number being the same as shown on the phone
6) Select yes on the car menu and confirm acceptance on the phone
7) The car should give an option of three types of connections - you need to select the first options (Carphone)
8) A menu prompt will also appear on your phone - to which you should select the tick box and confirm - basically this tells the phone to automatically connect to the car from now on without prompting

You should now have a rSAP connection

The above is form memory - try it and if you need me to go through each step in more detail, let me know and I will reconnect my phone in the car and write up exactly the prompts that the car/phone gives...

I would not worry about the software level - Samsung should be rolling out 4.3 anytime soon - and in the meantime any previous version of the firmware should work on the S4 mini

OK, I know for sure the S3 mini does not support rSAP, I have owned the S1, S2, S3 and S4 and they all had rSAP with the exception of the S3 with ICS 4.0.3 which then got fixed at a later stage. So maybe the S4 mini does have rSAP, I'm not a 100% certain now as I based it on my S3 mini findings. But if it does then you should be able to pair with it.

The S4 with 4.3 is not stable, it drops connection a lot.

4.4 is also out now so I may give that a whirl.

Samsung think the S4 mini has SAP capability.

S4 mini does have rsap, s3 mini does not.
Hope you get your connection issue sorted, I had to delete all my connections (phone and car) when I got home after picking mine up because the salesman made a hash of it and I couldn't get the data to work. Deleted, started again and hey presto...all worked.
The only issue I have is not being able to send text messages from the car, I can recieve but cannot send any of the pre formed templates. Someone else on here said they have no problem sending or recieving so I went back to the dealer and they are still insisting it is a function that is inop in the UK.
Be interested to know if you can when you get sorted.

SMILEMAN, Craigyb, as I've said before, the rSAP capabilities are a feature of ANDROID, not of the phone.

All recent phones (including S3 mini and S4 mini) have rSAP.

The problem with S3 mini was that the update to ICS 4.0.3 didn't work with rSAP. The next 4.1+ firmware does.

Only way s3 mini will work is if you root the phone first and then install an rsap app, s4 mini works straight from box.

So a prob with the software, not the hardware, as I said.

I'm not sure this is correct. Android provides a BT API to do basic things like search for devices, pair devices, manage connections and so on. It also provides three profiles; Headset, A2DP (audio streaming) and HDP ( supports 'Health' devices such as pulse monitors).

Android is a Google product.

Bt is overseen by a cross industry Bluetooth Special Interest Group which, amongst other things, sets standards for profiles including sap. If a developer, say Samsung, want to provide a protocol then Android provides an interface to support that and the BTSIG defines standards for the protocol. It is up to developers to provide whatever BT protocol they want.

Nexus phones, made by Google who 'own' Android, do not support SAP.

I think I'm right to say that SAP is a Nokia development (founder member of the BTSIG) and I suspect is pretty much on the way out; Apple don't support it, it is not supported on Windows devices and it's only available on a limited number of Android devices.

Thank you for that very helpful information, I will delete all connections from car & start again. I know from reading my owners manual that I must connect the phone to car using car option and not hand free, which I did.

The Audi technician sat in my for over an hour and we did try all of these options......and he could clearly not get the "data connection" option on my mmi screen to be high lighted as per manual.
but to be honest...he then said that no phones would give me full data access to google and I would have to put a SIM card in dash to use google earth, wiki & text options each time I got in the car ! I did tell him that this is a rediculas situation and there is no way that someone have to get into their car - remove SIM card from phone- insert to micro sim to adaptor - then insert this into dash - then remove when at each destination and put it back into phone before leaving car!

That at was he answer and could help any further......So I came straight home and spoke to Audi UK , explained this whole situation and they told me that all the phones tested on their owners section on web work 100% and I should get full data to car from my phone.
However , the selection on the Audi site does not or show S4 mini and the software it was tested on was SamsungGalaxy S4

Tested firmware version: I9505XXUAMDM
Last change: 23.05.2013

and that the new version 4.2.2 was the problem with rsap and that's why my brand new phone does not work.....? Marvellous ! That's when I replied to them :- so how do I buy a new phone with this old software on it ? ....couldn't reply but says that's why I'm not getting rsap connection.

So I will try once again...from scratch and see if this S4 mini will work ...if not is it worth me trying a the FULL size S4 ?

Will keep you posted & looking forward to getting fully connected ....and hopefully be able to send / receive text messages as well ?

Thanks for the very helpful information, pls tell me are 100% sure that the S4 mini with jellybean 4.2.2 has Rsap ? Because I only have 2 days left which to cancel this 2 year contract and I'm thinking of getting full size S4 if this resolves the problem ?
How do I know or where can I find out if these have rsap before buying ?
Any info..would be much appreciated

I know an s4 mini DEFINITELY works fully, but sorry I can't be sure which s/w I had, I'm running an s3 at the mo with 4.1.2 and it has full functionality including google maps etc, only txt sending is a problem, it seems not many techs in the dealerships really know what they are doing as far as phones are concerned, they contradict each other all the time.

Hi Smileman,

My phone definitely won't connect fully with car, I went through every avenue and when I pair the car phone to the samsung it comes up with pin no.which is accepted from car to phone all ok, then a message comes up on phone "allow sim access" which I say ok, then message on MMI connected states " connection failed" each time I try !

The phone directory is all working fine , Bluetooth & contact list are fine in car ....but I'm now 100% certain it's the software version of phone not letting the car have sim access ?

Going into Vodafone today and swap over for full size S4 & see if this works ? Can't believe what a pain it's been trying to get a mobile to work with a new car? ( the wife thinks I'm mad changing iPhones , Samsung phones etc...doesn't understand why )

Will hopefully resolve this issue soon....not giving up just yet !

Can anyone please confirm that a Samsung S4 (full size) with jellybean .4.2.2 works with our cars system ?

I would to know if anyone owns a S4 with this software loaded on it that currently works 100% with our Audi high prep system ?

if not ...can anyone tell me if the S3 works with ICS4.0.... Works ..as this would be my lasr resort but they have them in Vodafone shop and the Audi web state that these work ?

I can now confirm that today I finally got this Samsung S4 mini to work 😃👍 and have now got 3G connection with google and all online functions...I think.

I tried a friends S4 and experienced exactly the same connection with car, just phone only each time. So I deleted , reset and paired my phone again, using this time using the phone to search & pair ...and then it asked me to allow remote sim access a couple of times, accepted and then all of a sudden ...hey presto ! It gave me data connection👍

The only reason why I think I've had such difficulties connecting this function up is...I was using the car to search and then pair to phone ...not phone to search and then pair with car?
Very happy indeed ...just need to learn how to use all of this now !

Well the phones works perfectly well in car now ...with full data connection 👍, which I've never had before ..dud to always owning an iPhone , however you are right about the text message service ....it will only let me send out template messages and not send / receive normal messages ....these are greyed out and not available for some unknown reason?

Pls can anyone tell me approx.how much data is used by the car's google maps etc say for a half hour journey ? Shall I leave this Bluetooth function on all the time now or just when needed to navigate etc?

One annoying ‘feature’ of connecting using rsap, at least when I tried it, is that texts and call records are not all in one place.

Some are stored in the car, those that occurred while using rsap, and some are stored in the phone, those that occurred when the phone was not connected using rsap.

I found this to be a complete pain. I like all these things to be in one place.
