I've recently acquired a 2010 A4 2litre TDI Avant which is a great car in many respects. The only disappointment is the fuel economy. I'm only getting about 44mpg on reasonable runs at moderate speed. Is this all I can expect? This seems low for a modern deisel.

When was the car last serviced?. What miles are on it, is it auto or manual, quattro or FWD?

Is this a 143 or 177?
Either way, 44 is good.
I barely get 40.
Unfortunately, Audi have told porkys on the combined and extra urban values. These are under test conditions.
I think they've had their knuckles rapped.

On my A6 avant I get 52mpg easily and with a little effort can get even more....so 44 from an A4 I don't think is very good economy from a smaller lighter car unless it's a multitronic...
It does depend so much on driving style and conditions though. ..

High 40's / low 50's if driving at speed limit with steady acceleration. 60 mile commute on dual carriageway / motorway

Further info
Not sure what engine except that it is 1968cc diesel 143 PS
Gearbox is automatic with multitronic
40k miles so should be at peak of economy

I'm very disappointed with this fuel consumption. My driving style is 'old fart', low revs, no sharp braking. My previous car was a 2.2 litre Merc diesel which would do mid 50s easily.
Is there anything I could check?

The B8 never came with a 1.9?

I reckon you should get a bit better than that, but having an automatic probably restricts your potential. Old fart driving has to include very patient acceleration. That might make a difference. How are you measuring? DIS is not to be relied upon for accurate measurement!

MPG always is lower in the winter due to colder starts and extra ancils. Also check tyre pressures these can nobble MPG if incorrect.

Over 100k miles I averaged 45mpg in a 2.0TDI manual, so your numbers are not too far off but you should definately get higher on a motorway run.

Apologies to A6 Chris, I've editted the engine details since you put up your reply. Is my car a B8?

Boy, thanks for your reply. I don't use the full acceleration potential either. I'm taking the mpg from the displayed values - is this what you mean by DIS? I'll do a full to full measurement and see if it's any different.

On my way to work this morning I was a little low on diesel so watched my computer.
On a fairly straightish B road with heavy traffic doing 40mph I was up to 52mpg by the time I got to work.

Car is a 58 plate manual 2.0tdi 143 that has been re-mapped

I find that the consumption on mine depends on a couple of factors (excluding traffic volume) - temperature, and whether it is due to do a regen.

The colder it is, the higher the consumption I get, presumably due (at least in part) to the auxiliary heater and the other ancillaries that are running; and the closer that the car gets to that time when it feels the need to do a regen, the consumption is also higher.

I have had my car in recently to get the efficency of the engine checked and i am very disappointed in the MPG im getting with the car. I do most of my journeys at quiet times and use A-roads and motorways and in the 10,200 miles ive used the car my average has been 42.3 MPG. I have logged it on the spiritmonitor website to make sure it is accurate. I have a 143 2.0TDI Avant. It has come back with no issues although im not too sure.

My previous car, Skoda Octavia vRS CR TDI, was much better averaging 50.6 MPG over the 34,000 miles i had over the same ground. At the moment it is the only thing that is puting me off the car. I dont know that the 143 engine is having to work alot harder than the 170 in the vRS and with it being heavier too.

i'd be delighted to get 44 mpg! My long term average is 39! Mostly motorway use! Mine is automatic and I never take it out of 'S' mode when driving ;)

Ive got the 136e diesel. In 8k miles computer two average has not moved from 37.1mpg. Not once! Mileage Mostly round town. Im happy with the mpg a run usually returns 45-50 on the motorway.
