Im hoping somebody on here could help me with me gearbox issues.
When its very cold on a morning and start the car all the PRND lights light up the car clunks into gears and smokes quite heavily.
If i let it warm up on the drive then turn it off and back on again it goes ok and is relatively fine except it doesnt seem to have as much power as it used to especially on kick down when accelerating hard.
Ive been advised to try the gearbox oil and filter first.

Dave is your car quattro, ( tiptronic ) if so could just need code reading and box service ( oil and filter )
If front drive auto, then this is cvt/ multitronic and could be the start of something nasty, ( search multi- tronic faults/issues )
Generalising the tip (quattro auto ) box is bomb proof and the multitronic is the one that has major issues until around 2005.
All that said, I had the tiptronic in a 3.0 quattro A4 which had the tiniest hiccup and when code read showed an issue with the gearboxs' ECU
Best to get her code read with vagcom/vcds diagnostic equipment and take it from there before spending silly money

RWD version, indeed rare, in fact non existant
Quattro =tiptronic
Front drive= multitronic/cvt
Rear drive, never been made, just front or four

early 5 speed tiptronic with torque converter- very reliable ! Multitronic/CVT are problematic...

As I said above mate, if your car is quattro and auto, you have tiptronic, if your car is not quattro, (ie front wheel drive ) and automatic it is multitronic which is also referred to as cvt (Constantly Variable Transmission ).
The avant part just means it is an estate car
If you have no badges saying quattro on the car, take a look at the logbook and if quattro the car description should be A4 QUATTRO SPORT ETC
If still unsure take a peek under the car and if there are drive shafts on the rear axle, shes quattro, if no rear drive shafts, shes front drive and therefore multi/cvt, you can't tell just by looking at the gear lever as some think , because the lever is the same for both transmissions.
Good luck friend

Just realised your post title says A6 so ignore the A4 part of my reply ref the log book description
Also try posting in the relevant A6 section with as much info on the car as possible, ie year, model etc

The a4 and a6 was available till late 2002 with a 5 speed tiptronic gearbox manufactured by ZF, very reliable and it has a "prnd4321" gear selector as well as a +/- on the side. Multitronic/CVT had "prnd" and +/- on side...
With tiptronic gearboxes the oil and strayner will do a big difference when changing and ECU does go wrong, if you need a 5 speed gearbox controller i have one from a car i broke for parts...

Hi guys just as an update i do believe mine is the multitronic fwd version, ive had the oil and filter changed in the gearbox and the codes read and its still the same. only code that was on there was intermittent signal line from ecu.
Any advice now would be greatfully accepted im tearing my hair out.
