Howdy

I've had the my 2007 Passat estate 4motion for quite a long time now, I've changed the tyres on it twice now and was always told (or made) to replace four at the same time because of the 4motion system, which I just went along with. My current set of tyres are getting close to needing changing, but the back tyres still have 3mm on them. Does anyone know if it's okay to just replace the fronts or do they really need to be changed all at the same time? Obviously I'm not going to risk damaging the car over two tyres but some mates told me that changing all four was unnecessary.

Thanks,
Jim

The B6 Passat uses a Haldex system so tyres should always be changed in pairs and should be the same type/tread on each axle.

It is recommended by several tyre makers that the new tyres are fitted on the rear.( even for front wheel drive cars ) Lot's of people argue this point though.

Change them all. If you rotate them every few months it will wear them evenly. 3mm isn't a lot of tread anyway

Those who argue are wrong of course :)

New tyres on the rear, always.

of course the new tyres should go on the back of any car, you need the back to stay in place rather than being able to stop, don't you. :)
