Did post this in the new member section but thought id whack it in here too
Based down on the south coast in Weymouth and looking to get myself an A4 S Line Black Edition as a effort to grow up away from the hot hatches!!!
Don't really know what to look out for but im pretty switched on with car game just not so much the Audi...
I fancy the 177 bhp and can see a facelift around the 12 plate!!
Few questions are
1. Is there a big difference in the 12/13 plate 177 brake to the pre facelift 177 brake
2. is the 177 ps just a tuned 146 ps
3. Why do some of the slines seem to have shark fins and some don't?
4. generally any thing to look for!!
Cheers in advance for any help!!!!

Might be able to share a bit of knowledge. Had a 2010 170bhp A4 Avant SE as a company car, now driving a 2013 Facelift A4 136tdie Avant Technik.
Few minor aesthetic differences, mainly around headlamps, led's, front grill but nothing too obvious apart from the lights. Interior looks identical in both pre and post facelift cars, although MMI is far easier to use in the newer model, due to less control buttons and easier screen navigation.
Hard for me to compare engine's although the 136 is no slouch, it doesn't compete in overall drama vs. the 170bhp. Great engine. I assume that the newer 177bhp engine will be more refined, and better on fuel economy. 170bhp is seriously fast and I had no issues keeping up with the likes of a BMW 320d.
Major difference for me between pre and post models is the overall ride quality. TDIe , which has lowered suspension is far more comfortable than my old SE with the standard suspension set-up. Now cruises over bumps. Steering feels heavier at speeds as well. Major plus for me is that the new cabin is far quieter than the old cabin for road noise. Absolutely brilliant now. Not sure if that would be a deal breaker though.
Not sure about question 2, but I assume like BMW 316, 318, 320d, the A4 136, 143, 163, 177bhp engines will be tuned 2 litre variants of each other.
Can answer Q3 as my old A4 had no shark fin, and my new one does. Fin = Sat Nav Arial.
4) If it were my choice, I would purchase a newer A4 than a pre 2012 model due to the overall improvement in ride quality, gadgets and refinement. AMI also a must if you're into your music. Nothing wrong with the pre 2012 models though, still a great car and the 170bhp is a great engine.

Fin is also related to Bluetooth. But I have been told that some 2013's don't have fin but have Bluetooth

I had a 59 B8 S line, 143ps, and I have just taken delivery of a 63 B8 Black Edition, 150ps. Unless there has been another mid-point facelift that I'm not aware of, then there are many differences in the new A4.
The temperature digital readouts are now a cool white colour, instead of red. The heated seats now have level 3, 2, 1 LEDs instead of MMI on-screen 1 to 6 indicators. When you alter volume, you get an indicator on the MMI screen, which you did not before. The car has Stop / Start. All switch-work has silver trim. As you say, the MMI control buttons have been reduced... the main four are also now silver. But the biggest thing is the MMI screen itself - it's massively different on the facelift A4... it has a higher resolution and the screen estate is used much better... you can navigate down music folder structures and see your folder list at the top. Of course, with the facelift (as opposed to the pre-facelift) you also get 7 character postcodes and the option of having things like Google Earth with Audi Connect.
So, if we're talking about the same thing... then there's rather a lot of differences between the two versions of the A4 B8.
I'm also conscious that NedUK was mainly asking about the engine. ;)

I think its more than just the numbers. I've moved from a 2008 143ps to the 177ps and the difference in the way they drive is significant. See if you can test drive both TDIs back to back.

Cheers for the info guys!
I'm really draw to the newer version! Looking to comment it January after Xmas!
Defo want the 177 from what I hear it's much more tunable than the 146 with a remap taking it upto over 200bhp
Have many of you lowered your sline A4s or is the standard spec ok!

I've just bought a brand new black edition with the 150 engine. 800 miles in 2 weeks and I'm enjoying it very much!
I left a 2013 mercedes c coupe and found the mercedes comand system much better than the audi mmi, but that's the only gripe I have. Once you are used to it it's fine. The electronic handbrake is a pain in the **** sometimes. Decides where and when if it's going to work but I'm sure that's down to my own ability.
The 19" wheels are good, set the car off cosmetically and the ride isn't bad at all. If you like big wheels on cars and lowered suspension you will be fine. Some complain about the ride comfort but I've always had sporty cars with this set up and it's feels comfortable for me.
The driving position can see me twisted in the seat sometimes. I feel the pedals are Maybe set a bit off centre for my driving style but again this is personal preference!
