I wonder if some one can offer some thoughts please.
I have a 2008 Audi A3 1.9 TD, fine motor. I have just taken my car into a local garage after experiencing some starting and running issues. i have been informed via the garage that i will have to have ECU repaired ( a common fault i am told) along with a set of rear brake pads.

Now i know its hard to price as all garages have a different set costs on labour, would anyone be able to give me a rough idea of costs for the above work, as the price i have been quoted is quite high and unexpected...

Thanks..

Get a diagnostic scan done and post the results on here.

Thanks for the reply, diagnotic already done, and ECU sent off for repair, have no idea of result, except that the ECU is not wokring as it should, this was discovered when finding it hard to start or when running the car would stop, not all the time but at various times..

Do you have the exact fault codes?

Audi charge £129 for rear pads fitted.

There are several inexpensive to repair reasons why this can happen

oh jesus, this does really get to me. garage plug computer in , have no idea what results mean so send ecu off. if it goes to bba reman they charge 65 quid to test it. it is 99% likely this is not the fault.

Update.
Just made contact with garage and asked for diagnostic code, replied with the following, Sorry cannot supply diagnostic code / error as the ECU would not communicate. prime example of it being the ECU................

Ask them what they scanned it with, if VCDS ask for the full print log.

hmm, i like their thinking. my computer won't communicate so the ecu is at fault. it is garages like this that give the motor trade such a bad name.

UPDATE;
No print log with their diagnostics machine as nothing reported on readout, ECU sent to be checked by a company, alternitive suggested is possible fault in wiring.

Can anyone advise as to how long it would take to remove the ECU unit please.

Update of ECU.
After waiting quite a while, the ECU has been checked with no know faults. The ECU was placed back on the car by the garage, but now the car will not start at all. At the moment i so fed up am thinking of getting Audi garage to pick it up and get them to check it out...

Would be gratful for any thoughts.

i would get it to a main dealer or reputable specialist forthwith.
the garage its at will obviously want paying for what they have (not) done. i would pay them but write 'paid under prejudice' at the top ( think thats the right word, some smart alec will put me right). this means you can then chase them for the money through legal channels, and possibly for anything they have done wrong that now means it won't start.

We kinda suspected the ECU was ok. You need a new improved mechanic and Zollaf is correct, write "without prejudice" on the cheque.

Thanks all for the imput. Booked into Audi for Friday. It was suggested that Audi will have full diagnostic software, where as the local garage has minium software.

no, we are both wrong. write 'paid under duress' on the invoice and cheque. that means you have paid it to get your car back so you can get it fixed properly somewhere else, then recover your money from them using large nasty looking blokes. without prejudice is what you write on a letter so it won't stand in court, allegedly.

Brycie got a timing belt and water pump done recently by a man that had never seen a car before. he made a balls of it and Brycie was lucky he didn't need an engine however he did get his money back. If you take on a job, any job, you need to have the tools, experience and equipment to do the job. You can't be charging people for work you were unable to do. .

i have recently replaced a timing belt on an old r reg astra, one of the early eco tec engines. had a bit of a whine which was the water pump. shame as the belt was only done 17k miles away, but not by me. that had tippex marks all over it, but they didn't line up, which was weird. the inlet cam was retarded by one tooth. the bloke couldn't even get one of the simplest of timing belts right, heaven help us if he had to do something like an audi. how many cars are out there like it though ? makes me wonder.
