View Full Version : I think it's a B5?

Hi!
New to the forum, new to Audi, new to trying to work on cars by myself, so please bear with me if I ask some obvious (and possibly stupid) questions!
I've just bought myself an A4. It's a P reg, registered in 1996, engine size listed as 1781. A brief google and wikipedia search lead me to believe its a B5? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
A bit about the car, cost me £500 (listed at £600). 140K on the clock. Was in a **** state on the inside, lots of dirt, crumbs and stains, also stunk of stale smoke. Took me a good day to get it looking presentable. Faults that I know of: ball bearings starting to go on front nearside, will get a friend of the family to look at that so shouldn't be too many drama's. The brake makes a weird "springy" noise under light braking sub 5mph and has feels like the ABS has kicked in through the pedal. At a bit of a loss to that so if anyone has any suggestions please let me know. The sunroof doesn't even try to open and I can't find the spare manual lever so need to sort that out.
Aside from that I haven't found anything else wrong. Most of what I have planned for the immediate future (aside from the bearings) is tidying up the inside. First on my list is replacing the gear knob which has half of the leather hanging off.

Welcome to VWAF
On your chassis number which will begin WAUZZZ .. what are the two digits after the WAUZZZ? This will tell you the model number, post that up and I'll check.

Your brake pedal feel suggests warped discs to me - had a Ford years ago that had the same symptoms and it ended up needing discs

V5's not through yet, otherwise could have saved some effort putting my shoes and coat on.
Is there anyway of telling if it has warped discs? Aside from popping it into the garage?
Cheers for the help.

Come on Chris, 1996 A4 - of course it's a B5! Next three digits will be 1DZ!
The sunroof manual key will be located on the inside of the fuse panel cover.
In your case the fuse panel is located on the right hand (drivers) edge of the dashboard (inside the door recess)
The panel is clipped-on to the edge of the dash and pulls off. There is a recess for a screwdriver or the like at the bottom.

Brilliant, thank you for that. Never got a chance to pop out and check last night and the cars being borrowed by a friend today.
In regards to the sun roof handle, I've checked in the fuse box previously and it's not there. A google search for a replacement handle hasn't had any joy. Is there any websites that you know of where I can get one?

This sounds like dirty ABS sensors to me, I had the same on my B5 Passat of similar vintage. Will require the sensors to be taken out of the holders, cleansed and replaced. Problem is going to be if they've never been touched in nearly 15 years, they will take some getting out.
This is for a Passat, but will apply equally to yours also

I was going to help with the sunroof tool location, but someone was helpful and prompt. At a pinch, a normal screwdriver may work to open the sunroof but there are plastic parts around the socket which may get scratched, distorted or broken. My sunroof tool has a flat blade around 4.5mm, but the hexagonal shaft may give additional purchase.
22956Alternatively try holding the door key in the open position to see if the 'total opening' kicks in to open windows and or sunroof. (hold in close position to close them again)
Try a breakers or an internet auction site, should only be a few pounds.
Good luck with the car.

Thanks for all the replies. Sorry I've taken so long to respond, I'm on earlies at the moment and I'm working or asleep.
If the brakes are an abs sensor fault how would I get that checked? Garage job or is there a way for me to do it myself?
Cheers.
