hi guys,
looks like im gonna move from my 2003 sport estate to a 2005 highline estate.
mine has 180k on it, is still perfect, but tis one has come my way with 71k on it - and grey leather!
Drove it today and it is lovely - the 5 speed box seems fine, and i didnt miss the sports suspension as much as i thought.
mine having lasted me 5 years proves that the passat is the car for me - and this one should last me another 5 years.
anyone else made this change and have any comments? - any mpg ideas?
cheers
paul

Sometimes is better to stick with the devil you know, but- if you like the car- go for it ! One thing to note, the 5 speed gearboxes are not as reliable as the 6 speed boxes and the clutch is a little smaller- bear in mind if you looking into remaps/power upgrades !

Depends if you got steering wheel controls I think. Mine doesn't and it was easy to change the steering wheel.

I have both a 2001 passat and a 2005 Highline, the heated leather seats are great but I have had more problems with the 2005, they were dumbed down, the door locks are rubbish (had to replace 3 of mine with pre 2005 locks), the A post terminal rack is constantly wet and the causes many weird problems. There are missing lights on some switches, the 2001 cabin looks like the Starship Enterprise in the dark, the 2005 looks like Sputnik, next one I buy will be a 2004 at the latest!

well guys, saturday is the day for me to complete the swap!
the garage i am getting the highline from will be putting my sport on ebay
let me know if anyone wants me to post the link
it is in Taunton, its a 2003 130 sport estate, urban grey, cruise, climatronic, h seats, 170k miles
really good condition
faults:
rear wash wipe stopped working 3 weeks ago
o/s/r light lens broken
slight blistering of rust on one rear arch
i have had car for 5.5 years - i bought it on 99k
it has been without doubt the best car i have ever owned - i am a bit scared of changing to be honest!
anyway, let me know if you want me to post the link once they put it on sale
thanks
paulos

Just wondering how much the swap has cost you, why did you not post the 2003 for sale on here, a reliable passat is what we want.

hi caldirun,
im hoping the swap will cost me about 2 - 2.5k
the new one is 3200, im hoping to get around 1200 for the sport
i didnt want to sell it directly as i dont really have the time with two young kids, i really trust the garage, and they will advertise it very honestly on ebay and get me a fair price - they do that with all the cars that they do not want to retail

Hi Paulos, dont want to be a damp squib but think about it, still time to reconsider!
The 2005 is only 2 years newer (or less, it could have been on a parking lot for 12 months if sales were slack!)
£2000 extra for a swap to a 9 year old car from an 11 year old car (and one that you know is good) seems a lot of money to give to the garage.
The 2005 Highline in my experience is a much poorer quality car than the 2001 to 2004 cars.
70,000 miles as opposed to 170,000 on these engines only means one has had more cambelts (hopefully, has the Highline had a cambelt change?) if they are serviced with the correct fluids and parts 500,000 is no problem.

hey mate, dont worry about being a damp squib!
ive had my current passat for 5.5 years - and really fancy the change
it is the cleanest car i have ever seen - the guy went mad on the options - even the high quality carpet mats, and proper vw mudflaps and stuff!
it has vw option wheels - ill let you know what they are when i pick it up tomorrow
the exterior and interior are unmarked
im looking forward to the leather - and i really enjoyed the drive when i spent an hour with it
its got pdc - so all of my neighbours will be pleased ( the wife might of hit a few cars in her time!)
so i get your point - but im looking forward - and its only 3 grand - if its a lemon ill get out of it!
i drive a little alfa most of the time so im happy with that - i just pay for the passat, clean the passat, fix the passat, you get the picture!
take care all

(thats a good point - i dont need to change my handle - the new one is a 130 as well!)

I hope it is as good as you are expecting, it sounds great, I must admit I love the leather in my 2005 and it is super economical (I once did 857 miles on one tank, much better than my 02 100bhp Passat S)
I hope yours does not have the passenger side A post waterfall that destroys the plug and socket connections lower down (I have by-passed a few, I now need to by-pass the rest and throw the lot in the bin) and you do not get the door lock hassle that I have had (I buy pre 2005 door locks and fit them, much better quality)
You may notice the lack of illumination on the 2005, for some strange reason a few have been removed from the interior (vents are all lit on my 02 but not the 05)
My wife has the 02 so I drive it on occasions, I still prefer it, when the 05 dies it will be replaced with a 04, for sure.

by the way - the new highline is amazing - i will get some pictures up once i spend some more time with it - the wife has stolen it all week as she loves it so much!
its sooooo smooth, and the leather is great. I love the orange lights coming down from the mirror! They are very cool.
only used it on one long (ish) run - and only got 41mpg - bit disappointed - my memory goes back to when i was advised to update / replace the coolant temp sensor on my old one - should i go for that to start with do you reckon?
cheers

Should fetch £1500 if there are any taxi drivers around (if they go for estates that is), good luck
