Hello,
Im thinking of buying a 2008 Passat, 1.8 TSI, Automatic, High line,72,000 Miles on the clock.
From research on the car im looking at, its not DSG or Multitronic, its just a standard torque converter automatic.
Does anyone have any comments on this car in terms of reliability ?
Anything to look out for ?
Any comments greatly welcome, good bad or in different.

Parking brake motors, starting problems, ignition switches, injectors, oil pump balance shafts, steering locks the list goes on.
I don't think B6 Passats came with conventional auto's .. They were DSG.
I wouldn't buy one after reading all the horror stories on here, ticking time bomb really and pot luck whether you get a good 'un.

Chris, thanks for the reply.
The gearstick didnt have " DSG" written on it, so I got the VIN number and got the main dealer to do a check on it and they confirmed it was a conventional auto.
Are they really that bad though ? or is the problems your saying only isolated ?

1.8 B6's are auto not DSG, only the Diesel and the V6 are DSG and I'm not 100% about the V6 either,
Reliability wise the VAG automatic ime is a good box, I did 102k np in my 1.9 TDi Superb and it still felt good,
1.8 Engines don't have a lot wrong with them but can also eat oil like the diesels
If it's a TSi it should go like stink but the economy will be 21/33/28 so not good basically

A6 Chris must have got a lemon :)
Thanks for the reply. From what ive seen the 1.8 tsi Engine seems to be ok and ive heard the auto VAG boxes are decent.
mmmm, so economy not great
I do about 7000 miles a year, 75% of that would be in start/stop city driving. Will I get murdered on fuel costs with the 1.8 tsi ?

Go diesel!

Go diesel!
Why would I go diesel ???? !!!!!!
No need for diesel. I only do 7000 miles a year
And my driving style does not suit a diesel car (dpf's, short runs, city driving etc )

Fair enough.
So now you know its 7 thousand miles a year, any opinions on the 1.8 tsi ?

if you only do 7k a year why worry about fuel costs.

i know, it does soon add up. so, why not go for a diesel to get the lowest fuel costs. get something without a dpf and you won't have a problem driving it in a city, or stick to something with a smaller petrol engine. you either want economy or power. you can't really have both unless you get a 3 litre twin turbo diesel. now, theres a thought ??

From what im reading, in general modern diesel cars seem to be more troublesome than petrol cars, petrol cars just seem to be just simpler these days - or maybe that too simplistic of a view.

yes and no, and no and yes. the only reliable form of transport is a pushbike. too many emission regulations have made everything too complex and with complex comes unreliable and expensive. i siuppose a 1.8t is more reliable than most diesels, but then most diesels are ok now with just a few problems in the past with the 2.0, but dpf's do not like city driving at all. its a difficult one really, which is why my choice is an old audi 80 that never breaks down and costs nothing to maintain.

Thanks for your feedback.
I think though based on my mileage and driving style that a petrol is the way to go.
And the 1.8 tsi seems to be relatively reliable, has a bit of poke in it and the auto box seems ok.
However, Chris a6 has me worried now......

i think if you use the search function and look for 'b6 passat' you will find quite a lot. even people like crasher say they are rubbish. if he says something bad about vw then you need to take it seriously.

Ok. But is that in regard to diesels or petrols or both or just the build of the car in general.

The B6 Passat is cursed, look through this section and you'll see what I mean. I haven't owned a B6 Passat nor will I never own a B6 Passat due to the problems documented on here and they're expensive to fix.
Buy a Jetta 1.9 TDI, Golf MK5 underpinnings and the uber reliable 1.9

i am not really into them myself but i think its the car in general. it seems that if it can go wrong it will go wrong and cost at least a million pounds to fix. epb, steering locks, tyre wear, the list is long. do your research before buying, thats all i can say really. sure, plenty of people are happy and love their car but do check. even pm crasher and get his honest opinion. he is more qualified than most to tell yo whether they are a good car or not.
didn't see the above reply but i think that sums them up. :)

The 1.9 TDi PD is a very reliable and economical engine. Drop the clog and it goes well too. I'm not sure if the 2008 came with DPF but it's possible to map it off and the 1.9 would average 40+ mpg in traffic.

and in an audi its much better than in a passat. better still go for a skoda octavia. now theres a car if you want a petrol, an octavia 1.8t, also known as a vrs. the police use them you know.

Thanks lads. Honest feedback
every car these days seems to be cursed. I have a 320d currently and it's not the best.
I have a few cars in mind to replace the Beemer, have researched them all a bit and the best in terms of reliability seems to be a 2008 Volvo s60 2 litre petrol.

i think they are 180 D, but an easy lots more.
yes, ovlov's are good solid cars. i like the t60 myself. looks plain and boring but with 6 cylinders and 2 turbos doesn't hang around.

I think the 2008 Volvo s60 with 2 litre petrol engine has 5 cylinders. Wasn't aware of 2 turbos.

Na Chris is correct, the engine maybe different but it's still a B6 Bugmobile (and I don't mean Herbie) so factor in the ign key and the brakes as odds on to cost at some time and they ain't cheap, injectors, pumps etc should be ok although VW did have a coil issue on the B5.5 iirc so depending on the age this could still rear it's head,
If you are just pottering about town I think you'll probably see about 25 on the maxidot which isn't bad for a petrol engine of that generation, 1.6TSi? DSG B7 is another animal, this one will top 30mpg urban but the dry clutch DSG in it can snatch a bit, or at least it did in the Golf loaner I had but it went really quick and matched my 2.0 PD DSG for economy.

Good but why when you can have an S80, both will only do low 20's urban, the Volvo's are a much nicer car though, I replaced my B6 with an Insignia and although the VW did a few more MPG's I really love it, the problem with VW's now is they are so spartan inside now, totally ruins the experience and makes you feel like you spent 30k on a basic Proton.

Nowt wrong with an Ulriiiiikakakar I really wanted the S80, a salesman couldn't get me another £300 for the B6 so I went for the Insignia and then not two weeks later they dropped it the £300 I needed.

Can be expensive to repair, low cc petrol engines are underpowered.
