Any reason why some foglight grills have cutouts and others do not? From what I've seen those without actual foglights are blanked off (just a small hole to be able to pull the plastic grill out) but those fitted with foglights are fully vented - oddly, some have cutouts on the passenger side but not the driver's side. I thought it could be to cool the intercooler - but then why not all Passats (or Jettas etc.) unless not all have an intercooler? Could it be to improve drag co-efficient etc?

Put simply its to attach the towing eye.

Yes that's right of course - it is designed to be pulled out (after removing the screw) and for the towing hook to be inserted. But, why are they designed differently for the same car? If you check you'll see that some have these black plastic grills with cut-outs (i.e. no backing and fully vented) whereas mine are solid (except for the small removal hole) and I do have an intercooler (but no foglights). I've seen Passats (& Jettas) with fully vented grills that have foglights - why?
