Am I alone in thinking the 18" S Line wheels look, well, crap?
I think I'm going to wear the tyres out then change the wheels for 19" or 20". The cost of tyres on 20's is damned scary to say the least so I think 19s could be the best compromise.
I have seen one other on here who has changed their wheels, has anyone else and what did they get? I'm thinking of aftermarket not genuine as the cost is laughable but may get a set that mimic genuine such as these;

I have a set of 18" replica as winter wheels as I have 19"s on during the summer. The quality isnt as good as the geninue wheels and are heavier but were a fraction of the cost and as they ae going to spend most of the time covered in winter grime wasnt that fussed. I went for 19"s as the cost of replaing 20" tyres put me off as I cover 35k a year.

Those Rotor style alloys in your photo are the mutt's nuts. If you can get replicas of them, I'd go for it. The only worry with replicas is getting ones with the correct offset.

I have 19" 7 spokes on my Avant and they look very nice but are a pain to clean properly. I think the size of the 18's doesn't fill out the wheel arch quite enough but I have no objection to the 5 spoke design itself, in fact I was expecting 5 spokes on mine but it turned up with the 7's.

Each to to their own but on top of the cost of going to 20's and keeping rubber on them (serious money) you will lose some ride quality.

I'm pretty sure I'm going with 19s as well for the ideal compromise so I'm guessing a 40 profile will be required with the tyres.

Quick question - do you need to tell your insurance company you've changed the alloys? - does it count as after-market modification ? If so, does it push the insurance up ?

You should, yes. Or you could simply claim they were on there when you bought it.

The wheels I'm looking at have a ET of 43 Vs the standard of 45, I'm guessing that won't make much difference?

I couldn't possibly comment! :D

I never even gave the cost of tyres a thought I was so chuffed with getting the BE with them as standard. Fortunately I don't do mega miles and I've reduced the mileage even further by getting a hack for work and dodging about etc.

Ride quality is still pretty good with the 20" wheels.

Think you need the 20 inch rims to make the car look smart them 18's are just boring

Changing to an ET 43 from an ET of 45 would move the wheels 2mm towards the outside of the car and hence 2mm nearer the bodywork.

I ought to add that is assuming the same width wheels.

The only way I was going to have an A6 was with big wheels. That's why the BE was the one for me with 20's. The ride on the A6 is still very good as Passatier3 says. I find it a good balance between sport and luxury.

The ride is a lot softer than an A4 with 18's and that was ok generally.

I've been chewing this one over since I collected mine on Sept 19th. I'm not sure I dislike the wheels but it's true they don't fill out the arch as well as the former S line wheels on my TT. The car also looks a little high on the std S line 25mm drop and I'm wondering about changing the springs to the optional 30mm drop before I change the wheels. Would this require a damper change?

I do 25k P/A so tyre cost is a major consideration.

I think the standard 18" wheels look absolutely fine. Really dont see the logic in spending around £2K on those rotor efforts and end up looking like a drug dealer!

Hardly a drug dealers look by any means. In my opinion, The 20 Rotors on an A6 aesthetically balances the car better due to the sheer size of it. With 20s there is still enough room in the arches to go much bigger as there is still a gap. The A7 BE comes with 21 inches as standard which is a similar size to the A6.

I think the 18 s are there primarily for comfort, but as mentioned. The ride is perfectly fine on 20s.

In contrast you can get Alloys which are too big for a car, but 20s are worth it for the A6. It's not outrageous, it's balanced. Do an image search for Audis with 22 inch rims. That is when it gets ridiculous.

Hopefully meant as a joke but if not a bit of a silly statement! :D

If there was any danger of them making the car look like a drug dealers car then I wouldn't have had them. They are a nice style, size and fairly restrained in fact and suit the car well. Black/dark wheels are generally the fashion now anyway - not that I follow fashion I just like them!

I think the car would have to be somewhat more blinged up to be considered a drug dealers/pimps mode of transport! :biglaugh:
