Hello B5 Avant drivers

I noticed that my boot key slot is full of gunk and it doesn't function.

The flap that supposed to cover the open slot look like it's been stuck open for very long time. I prodded with a BBQ skewer and I get loads of silver/metallic/candle wax ish gunk. I managed to clear the gunk enough so that 90% of the key enters the slot. And to my frustration, I forcefully turned the key and now the key slot twists freely… I think I broke the key cylinder… Otherwise, the boot locks with remote central lock and it works fine. Just the mechanical un/lock from the key cylinder is broken (I broke it).

Do you think I get a second hand replacement of the key cylinder? An easy DIY job? Does it involve choosing the “right” cylinder to match my key, or do I need a VIN or code to find the right cylinder, etc?

The boot key lock is (please discard of the tacky paint... it's on my "to do" list...):

22775

And the VAG catalogue gives me the part codes of either:

22776

8D9862055 - “lock cylinder with keys and housing “ * cannot be used to restore * * the one key locking * * system !! *
107862055CA - “lock cylinder without key” * to retain the one key * * system the key code * * number and/or chassis * * number must be quoted * * when ordering *

This sounds like a dealer job; any possibility of by-passing a dealer or hefty garage labour? I’d like to work on it myself if at all possible for a novice DIYer (I replaced rear washer jet, oil & filter, that sort of basic DIY).

I am thankful of any advice to guide me to the right direction. Thank you!

The cylinder is easy enough to change. You can buy off a dealer and your key will fit. One from a similar car at a breakers will also fit but, if they have a key they'll be reluctant to sell as the key is coded to the sell-able cluster/ecu. Even if you got one, you'd then have to carry 2 keys. Usually you just need to prove to the dealer that you own the car, give him your chassis number and prepay. Last one I got was £50.00

Thanks Doctle.

It makes sense. Roughly, how much do you think it'll cost to get the cylinder (can I replace just the cylinder or do I have to get something else to fully work?)?

It's not that important to have the key cylinder to work, but it'll be nice to have it operational.

For no key one just look in your local rag/free ads for someone breaking a similar car cost 5-10 pounds. I bought a new one that the key fitted for £50.00 it costs €80.00 in Ireland. It's not difficult to change if the cylinder has disintegrated just replace it nothing else is needed

Brilliant thank you!
I'll ring around breakers and dealers and see what responses I get.

Out of curiosity, are car keys for the same model same year completely different from one another in terms of the teeth pattern? I wouldn't think that there are infinite amount of key pattern, but may be a handful of major pattern (say 5 or 10 major patterns) with subtle differences (100 minor differences); would a key with similar major pattern open another car with a key in the same major pattern? Or it doesn't work that way with a car key? Just a curious speculation so I don't have a solid evidence to support this.

But thanks again and I'll post any update when I have some news

Called the only breaker in town and another one in nearby, they don't have them. Fair enough.
So I called the dealer; they can get me made for my key for £140.

Okay nevermind, thank you...

eBay I guess...

HAHA! I want your brain. You just found me the right thing in 5min!

That link is for Saloon B5, I'll check with my Avant to see if the boot cluster is the same as on the picture or not. Should'nt be too different should it?

Thank you doctle!
