Hi Guys,
Started removing the front struts on my 1997 cabby, and found these bits floating around between the top cap and top mount on both struts:

Are the supposed to be attached to the top mount? As I can’t find these parts listed anywhere.

that is a bodge to remove the up and down play to pass an mot. it is in the book though that some play is allowed.
there is the top mount , then the top cap with its bit of rubber around the edge, nothing else. use good quality mounts though, febi or genuine. there are some blue s2 heavy duty ones on ebay now and again. never tried them but they are probably good.

if the mot tester read the testers handbook he would know that the type of macpherson strut fitted to the 80 has to be tested under load ie with the wheels on the ground with the full weight of the car on them, then there is no up down play, if you have this problem with your mot tell the tester to look it up! the info is online if you search. i had mine fail with new mounts and had to point this out.
