Thinking of getting a personal number plate for my on order a6 avant.

Good or bad idea?

Never really fancied one myself, but each to their own. In all honesty I could never find one that seemed very personal to me that I could justify the cost.

What did you have in mind? Personalising to the car or your name? Or something else?

I've got a 'dateless' plate on mine, three letters followed by three numbers. You can't tell if the car is two weeks or two years old.

That said I've never been bothered about having the latest plate or driving an older car, however, it was a gift and I suspect not very expensive.

I have a plate from 1991 on my A3, had it since new buying my Pug 309 and it's always been transferred off any car that I've had it on once they're fit for the scrapper! Always meant to put it on my A6 but never happened.

3 letters then 3 numbers.

Is it as much as personalising the car to your name for some as perhaps de personalising the car ie to make it dateless as suggested above?

I never really thought about the latter - but I see it now.

A bit like de badging the car I suppose. I would definitely fall into that group more than the personalising to name etc.

My plate dates back to 1974 ...

Personal plates can be good, but the process to swap the plate when you change the car can put a spanner in the works and the DVLA have now closed the local offices to save cash and a friend of mine told me the current delay was like 4 weeks - which is a nightmare.

We have one and I will struggle to have another.

I have taken my personalised one of my van 2 weeks ago and all was done in a week. Sent forms of on Monday. Got the letter with new reg and tax disc on Thursday and the new V5 on the following Tuesday. I ve done this for years and always the new plates start with MX?????? And always takes a max 2 weeks

You can can OO00 plus 3 letters for around £800.

Almost bought one that would have read, A A6 OWEN. Got outvoted on that one.

I've had my plate since whenever the "R" reg came out c.1998 I think. Have transferred it to every car since. As others have said it makes the car dateless. The transfer process was a pain as previously stated. My local DVLA office used to turn them around in a couple of days but it took nearly 4 weeks when it went direct to Swansea. They the cocked it up by putting a space in front of an initial letter that prevented the dealer from registering the new car online. I then had to go through the hassle of sending everything to Swansea again. When I complained they told me that they are working on an online system that will speed everything up.

Moved the one I've always had on bikes (less digits mean a legal smaller plate) to my van not long ago, done in about 5 days including paperwork.

I just need someone with the initials WUF to buy an R8 and then come a knocking...so I can tell them where to go.

Filled in the retention forms to keep my G4 plate (both me and the wife have 'G4 - then initials' plates; luv em) New Black Edition A6 coming the end of this month. The only thing that sticks in the gullet with the plates is the cost of moving them: £105 retention fee; someone is taking the urine there me thinks.

Isn't it free to then place them within the retention period though. I had the same argument until it was pointed out I wasn't paying twice.

I've got a couple on my motorbikes - initially it was just because I didn't like the plates, one was a Dorset plate and I live in Warwickshire and the other had BBC on it, but managed to get two almost the same with the engine size and my initials so well chuffed.

My missus might get one for her Mini but I'm not too fussed with my car.

Yep, I've got one. Initially I got it to stop watching my plate age, don't know that I'd be that bothered now. Nevertheless, I like having a personal plate. Had to correct the spacing for PC R*****n of Kent Constabulary who warned that were my car stolen they'd not be able to find it. Hmmmmmm. I'd trust Tracker a lot further. He was unswayed by my observation that all airport car parks etc have no trouble with the movement of the 6 nearer the R. However, he had not succeeded in videoing my speed as required and I think this was just pique.

I've now had it now since my B5 and get it changed by the dealer. The most recent change (September 19th) took only about 12 days. Quicker than the old local office. Cost £250 and still £80 per change.

Ever thought about getting your name changed to match the car reg? If you intend keeping it some time it may just work out cheaper.

I just don't want to stand out, that's also a big reason why I prefer Audi to BMW and Mercs, I believe them to be more understated, and less ostentatious. All said I have a friend with a 2 letter + 2 numbers plate and it looks very smart, also very memorable so I would not recommend this for the spirited driver. As for plates made to look different, be it spacing, rogue black dots or back to front characters, why?!

Because when your name is K. Griffin. K 6RFF works rather better than K6 RFF. Still perfectly readable with no dodgy dots etc

Yes the transfer onto the new car is included in the Retention Fee; Still thought it was a bit steep tho. Hey-ho.
