My car has just had its 38k service and it also had some recall work done on the exhaust gas recirculation system.
Anyone know what the problem is?

Posted this in one of the other threads...The dealership also applied another recall notice while they had the car. Something to do with rotating a valve in the exhaust system. In the standard orientation there is a potential for coking to occur on the valve. The recall rotates the valve 180 degrees which prevent the coking apparently. My A6 is a 2.0TDI and from the recall notes, shown to me by the Service Rep. during hand over, it read like it was only an issue for that engine type.

I had this done too, after some issues with engine warning lights coming on.
Details can be found here:
Engine Emissions Control Warning Light (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?146602-Engine-emissions-control-system-warning-light&p=814518#post814518)
I believe it only applies to a certain production date batch of cars.

I think both of these are the same thing. Some cars were fitted with engines where the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve was fitted the wrong way around - ie 180 degrees out (not back to front). This results in the recirculated exhaust gases flowing into the throttle and gumming it up. The engine functions fine for a few thousand miles, then starts doing weird things as the carbon builds up - the stop/start malfunctions, the engine runs on when you stop it, and the EML comes on.
Since mine was fixed I have had no further issues.
Cheers!

Thanks MF, I did notice my car continued to run when i arrived home from my daily commute last week, I.e pre recall to turn the valve. I thought it was the fan continuing to cool the engine but do recall thinking it was very loud.

The fan running after the engine has stopped is normal - it usually means the car was in the middle of a DPF regen when the engine was stopped. The "running on" I'm referring to is where the engine splutters on for a couple of seconds after it should have shut off - usually accompanied by heavy vibrations. Mine started doing this before the EGR issue was sorted, and has never done it since.
Cheers!
