It's incredible. Even with black edition, the ride is smooth and comfortable. Acceleration is phenomenal, although as I'm only 500 miles in, I'm testing it infrequently, and not doing full throttle or taking it beyond 3500/4000 rpm (except once when it became necessary during an overtake and I winced a little). Coming from an A5 2.0 diesel, and Nissan 350z, neither of these cars prepared me for the wonderful contrast of luxurious comfort, and powerful performance I've experienced this week. As you can tell, this is the new love of my life (second to Mrs H of course).

or taking it beyond 3500/4000 rpm (except once when it became necessary during an overtake and I winced a little).

I had a day with a 350z, I recall it was tail happy as a direct result of intentionally using the accelerator in place of steering :-). I had to opt for the tamer SLK in fear I'd lose my license in the 350z.

Most of that torque is below 4000 :-). I actually miss the feel of a my SLK350, but the BiTdi is so different it's hard to compare. From a just a speed perspective and comfort the BiTdi is much ahead. Agility the BiTdi is also leaps ahead, only with that quattro and sports diff I don't feel the car like I would the SLK, so the family are happy passengers, but as a driver I am missing the romance. Perhaps I could push this harder, but honestly on b roads and bends I don't want to find this cars egde!

Ive had my BiTDI A7 for 4 days now and DAMN its good. The sound in dynamic is amazing and the power, torque and overall pace of this car is amazing. My wife has an A5 with the 245 bhp 3litre diesel and this is just in a different class. ITs seems so much smoother when accelerating but gets you to the same speed just as quickly (quicker actually). I love it and wait until its broken in and can give it some beans.

Thanks for the comparison, it makes me feel better about my A6, because I fancied the A5 for so long! We know it's factually quicker, but do you also feel the A7 is hiding it's speed through comfort when compared?

The A5 is a very good looking car and we both love it but I like my A7 more! I do think some of the speed is hidden by the comfort of the A7 (and probably the A6 although never driven one). It just doesnt seem to pick the speed up the way the A5 does although there is no doubt its shifting when you look at the speedo. It maybe because it is a larger car and therefore would take more speed to feel as if it is going as quickly? Either way, they are both awesome cars and have there own individual traits.

I was lent an A5 Sportback when my car in for a service recently. The drive home convinced me it was a 2ltr diesel with S-tronic box, mainly based on the lack of refinement of the engine, however I was quite impressed with how well it went. Only when I got home and looked under the bonnet, saw it had a V6 and the 245 version to boot ie exactly the same engine and gearbox as my A7. I was really surprised with the way that the A5 lacked refinement with such a (normally) mega smooth drivetrain, just shows how good the A6/7 chassis is in comparrison to the ageing A4/5 platform.
