View Full Version : Automatics in the snow..... (schoolboy question lol)

I'm going to ask a question and after nearly 20 years driving I should really know but this is my first Auto.

As we are supposed to be getting another really cold winter, I was thinking about how I drive an automatic. Older cars used to have a selection of 2nd gear which I was told for snow. When I had my last 2 liter derv focus I used to set off in 2nd.

The thing with my 2L auto B8 is that it only has drive and sport mode in auto, and the manual selection won't let you select 2nd at a standstill. Are there some crafty electronics that know when there is potentially snow and use the gearbox accordingly or is it a case of tickle the throttle and let the esp kick in?

I know it's probably a really simple question to ask but I would rather ask and know what to do than stuff it in the snow.

Keep it in S and it won't change up unexpectedly when creeping/being cautious ;)

Hasn't failed me yet in my A6 but it is used for some cheeky 4 wheel drifts .. quattro loves snow ;)

fit snow tyres, select drive, put foot down and let it do its stuff. an auto is gentler at taking up the drive than you are with a clutch, generally, so just be gentle and take it easy.

A6_Chris - Unfortunately i only have fwd but a quattro would have been fun lol.

Zollaf - I may need some tyres soon so winter options may be a good idea. I have space to store the wheels so a winter set of alloys as well could be on the cards.

winter tyres really do make a difference. i have just put a set of avon ice touring st's on. they are fine at the moment but i can't wait for some snow to try them out. you are just so much safer on winters. apparently some insurance companies try to charge more if you fit them. if they do, go elsewhere or take them to court for being profiteering, or go to the ombudsman, do anything, but don't just accept it.
