View Full Version : Hill hold

I know the hill hold assist only works when the seat belt is plugged in, but just found out this morning, this can cause problems if you rely on it.
We got a barrier into our work car park, had hill hold assist on as usual (I'm used to it holding the car whenever I stop).
However, as I'd undone the seat belt to get my wallet out of pocket with car park swipe, hill hold assist wasn't on and the car rolled back.
No big deal, logic just seems a bit strange, I'd want the brake on even more if I take my seat belt off off, as it probably means I'm getting out !!
Is it just me or can anyone else see the sense in this, other than encouraging people to wear their seat belts ?
Also, did we ever get to the bottom of if the hill hold assist on/off is remembered between each journey. My manual doesn't, I have to turn it on each time. most people with auto's seemed to say it would remember - is it an auto box thing or does anyone else have a manual that remembers if you want hill hold assist on or off on next journey?
Thanks as usual.

Think the memory feature for Hill Hold is a MY14 feature. Would be good to know if it can be added via VCDS for those of us with earlier cars

I don't use hill hold on my A6 for reasons stated in a recent thread.
But on my A4 if you had HH on and undid the seatbelt is would apply the parking brake.

This is very unusual. On my car, (MY13), when the hill hold is on, and you do anything to upset it (e.g. undo the seatbelt, switch the car off, etc.), the handbrake comes on. Hence, no chance of car rolling. So, not sure how it happened in your case...

Yes it seems to be a MY 2014 thing that it remembers various settings between start-ups. Apart from hill / hold it also seems to remember the last screen that you had the MMI set to - I recall some folks complaining that it defaults to Nav (or whatever).
The one thing it does not remember that I would like it to is Stop / Start setting... that is always 'On'.
I've offered before - if there is someone locals to Stratford Upon Avon that wants to have a root through my allroad firmware settings with VCDS then I'm happy to find an hour.
As above, if I do anything to upset the hill hold assist it puts the 'handbrake' on. The only time the car rolls back is when I think the hill hold assist is on - but it isn't.
Happens more than I'll admit to!

Thanks everyone for the replies. Realise now the difference was I took seat belt off as approaching the barrier, ie car still moving, so HH hadn't yet stopped the car. When I did stop, and expected it to come on, it didn't because the belt wasn't in. Noticed same when taking seat belt off to reverse etc. personally if I've pressed the HH button I'd like it to stay on, not turn itself off just because I've removed the belt. Hope this makes sense.

As we've said on other posts in some ways cars are becoming too complicated and either do things you don't want them to do or vice versa.
And with reference to UKG's post my cars a 2013 MY, so doesn't remember the last setting for the HH i.e. it's always off when I start the car but does display the last screen from when it was turned off. Being a BE it's AMI though, but don't know if this would make any difference?
