Just ordered my A6

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum but been lurking the past couple of weeks. Just ordered my new car last night. Build week 44, due for pick-up by the end of November.
Taken on board advice about DTD and OrangeWheels (the latter being near useless, unfortunately) and got my local dealer to throw in lots of extras for near nothing. Not as good a price but I was wary about DTD and the no printed quote, we need your card number to take a deposit now sort of thing. Felt too pressured. My local dealership were very accommodating and patient so they get the sale.

I've ordered a 2.0 TDi Multitronic Black Edition, Daytona Grey with the 20" 5 segment alloy option. Extras include advanced key, 4-zone climate, rear view camera, tech pack, lighting pack, folding mirrors, S-Line suspension, heated front seats and 75L fuel tank. I hope I've picked the best options for future resale value!

My first question is about the AMI. I'm confused about all the cable types. Black for USB, blue/red for iPod/iPhone etc with the red being the later, more advanced lead, is that correct?
Is the USB lead a micro USB for connection to an Android phone? Or a bigger USB lead for an external hard drive? Will I get cover art with that?
Does the red Apple lead work with all iPods or just iPod Touch? I have a 160GB iPod classic that holds most of my music but not all so external HDD would be my preference but I'd take cover art over having all of my music in the car.

You can get 128GB cards quite cheap, or 256 or 512GB but the price goes way high.

That leaves the USB free to charge your phone when you want to and no whiring sounds from Ext HDD

Also, in theory you can get a AMI to micro USB cable, it appears in the catalogue and I ordered one, but it never came.

My music collection is tipping over 300GB now so 2x 128GB cards wouldn't be sufficient. And on the topic of whirring, I would probably go for an SSD eventually:

Far, far cheaper than the £500 or so for a 256GB SD card!
I've seen the micro-USB to AMI cable on Audi's website but with plenty (!) of micro-USB leads around the house, there's no need.

So, to the second part of my questioning, does music access over USB provide a cover art option or is this an Apple only thing?

Red AMI cable will only work with iPod Touch (2 onwards), iPhones (any generation) and iPod Nano 6 onwards (small square one with touch sceen). If you want to use the iPod Classic then you will need the Blue Cable and you will not get Album Art or the ability to play video. You can get Album Art if you put the right files in the right format (there is an image size constraint) on to an SD Card and as you have gone for the Tech park you will have 2 slots available so plenty of capacity. Can't speak for whether Album Art is available from devices connected via the USB but suspect it may not. Enjoy the car when it arrives, the excitement will build over the next few weeks

I found another thread on another forum, related to the A5 but still MMI+, that states that the album art needs to be embedded in each .mp3 file for it to be shown over SD, USB, etc.
So I think my options are either go through my music collection and attach folder.jpg to each .mp3 by hand or buy several 64GB iPod Touch... or do without!

Easy to Automate, if you are on Windows or can run Windows Apps then something like TagScanner (which is/was free) will (from memory at least) hunt the album art for a folder of mp3 files and embed a jpg from Amazon.

A brave person could let it loose on a an entire root folder filled with mp3 files. I would suggest reigning it back a bit and doing it bit by bit, but probably worthwhile as we'll all be using things like this for playing music in the home eventually - I do already.

Cheers for this added info. I use Tag and Rename for ensuring all my albums are fully tagged and appropriately named but found it cumbersome for album art - especially when doing a Gracenote or other DB lookup.
Most of my album art comes from my Subsonic server. When I'm listening to an album through the client, I can append a folder.jpg through a Google search built-in - much quicker.
But the idea of an automated tool intrigues me, I shall give this a go, thank you.

It's probably not as automated as you are thinking, and at 300gig, it'll take a while, but if you have the same OCD values for things like that then it's a start. Your client embeds after you've searched or appends a folder.jpg to the folder?

Just appends a folder.jpg but reading a review about this tool: https://projects.gnome.org/easytag/ suggests I could navigate to the folder and drag the jpg onto the mp3s to embed easily.
Not fully automated but quicker than other tools but does lack the lookup in case I have missing images. Will give that and TagScanner a go to see how quickly I can get my albums done!

TagScanner works beautifully. Added a couple of albums at first and you can select all and right click to import and embed album art from the .jpg in the folder. If it doesn't have one but one or more of the mp3s does, you can export then import to all mp3s in the folder. And you can perform the lookup against one mp3 and do the same thing for the remaining files.
Ran it overnight against all my files so now just have the task of filling in the blanks. That'll pass the time whilst I await delivery...
