My neighbour knocked this afternoon to see if I'd noticed the damage to the tyre on our Avant... I went to have a look and sure enough two large cracks in the tyre side wall. To start with I was hopeful it was deterioration of the rubber but the more I look at it the more it seems deliberate and done with a blade! :zx11:

So now I'm in the market for a pair of front tyres... gutted!

Definitely looks deliberate to me! Had it parked anywhere dodgy lately?

Least your sliced sidewalls match your kerbed alloys

It does look very much like a blade. I once had a similar type slice on the inside of my tyre! Somehow caused by a stray brake disc which some how pinged off the car in front and ricocheted underneath my car with the last action putting a slice in my rear passenger tyre - very similar to that. Tyre flat immediately and wibbled onto the hard shoulder.

Yeah, I think you guys are right... I'm hopeful for the sake of the human race that this was accidental but have serious doubts!

Luckily they f'ker didn't breach the side wall but I'd not be happy driving it anywhere like that!

And thanks for that Chis, the plan was to do them this summer but it's didn't happen and I won't worry again until the spring now. Just waiting for the chavy valve cap comments now lol

edit: it never gets parked anywhere other than my wife's work, ice hockey or home so I have no clue when or where it happened! To top it off I had valve caps pinched off the Beemer while I ran into Tesco the other night too :(

Is there no form of insurance that covers damages like this? Our home contents insurance covers other bits & pieces outside of the home, so I wondered if you may be covered by that?

I remember a few years ago in Brackley some toerags slashed & punctured over 100 cars' tyres over a few days. What a pita for you though.

I'm doubtful to be honest Brycie... I expect the house insurers would tell me to speak to the car insurer!?!

Trouble with insurance is you end up paying for it in the long run anyway and for the sake of a £250 (pair of Avons) I might as well just get it done myself.

As for valve caps - you can make it out in the second picture... I wasn't too sure I liked them but feel they work with the wheel design quite well. Better shot of them just for reference:

When we bought our last car I opted for the tyre an wheel insurance it was £300 one off payment but I got them to throw it in with the deal.
I think you can claim 10 wheel repairs and 5 new tyres and it a 3 year policy.
First claim for kerb rash went in yesterday :(

Mate, that is gutting! I will never understand what drives cretins to do mindless damage like this.

Makes my blood boil this. When I was a kid, I was by no means an angel, and we did used to terrorise the area... But we never cost anyone any money!!!

Ahhh that is horrid!

Happened to me twice on my first car. - Ive also had nails/screws placed infront of the tyres at night so i would drive over them in the morning rush to work.

Never understood how someone can get a kick out of it..

I've had the tyre insurance from ATS/STS when on the A4- @ £15 a tyre more than paid for it's self. One blow out and one massive bit of metal- both a couple of months after new tyre being fitted. Beats paying £150+ for a replacement.
