View Full Version : Iritating small things about C7

Hello,
As you know, I'm a new A6 C7 owner (coming from VW Passat CC) and I wanted to share a few thoughts. I have found some small little things about this car that annoy me and I hope that you can advice something or share your experience.
1. I have a dual zone Climate Control, but I drive mostly alone. Why the hell there is no way to synchronize the temperture setting for the driver and the passenger? Every time I'm hot or cold I have to play with two knobs! Very annoying and disturbing.
2. When I connect my iPhone over Bluetooth I can't browse the playlists/songs - i can only play the next one...It also often hangs, had big delays before next songs.
3. "Tour Info" in the NAVI displays some random/key turns but I would prefer to see the upcoming 3-4 manuvers, is that possible?
4. I'm used that when I use the steeringwheel buttons I can browse through songs and the effect is vissible on the NAVI screen. However In my car I have to stare at the small screen between instruments, because steering wheel buttons have no effect on the MMI screen. It's like they are not synched/connected at all.
5. Can I somehow set the speed (I have Adaptive Cruise Control) up to 1 mph? When driving for example in 70 mph limit zone I like to set the cruise control to let's say 73, to make up for the speedometer error margin. It was not a problem in Passat and here it seems that I can only increase speed by 5 or 10 (higher speeds).
6. The armwrest cubby is a joke. In Passsat or other cars I could store tons of things there. Here I have a space for a very flat wallet.
7. Any way to read emails or SMS messages on the MMI screen (iPhone)? If I keep my phone in the armwrest, it's a dramma when I hear I got a message and want to check it while driving...
8. Any way to individualy control the ambient light - for example turn down the brightness of some of them?
9. In Passat when I turned the volume all the way down the current song would pause (that made a lot of sense). Now it just continues playing. Any way to change that? How do you pause a song in general?
10. How to view the current (at this very moment) fuel usage, but represented as a number (not the graphical bar)?
11. When playing songs in the MMI (like before first sound appears) I usually hear significant background noise, like in the old days when something was recorded on a poor quality tape. In general the player/radio seems to be very sensitive to the quality of the mp3 or FM reception (in the old RNS 510 unit the reception was almost always crystal-clear, though I think it switched to mono when the signal was poor). Do you also have that kind of impression?
12. Speed limit recognition function is often completely stupid. It would detect a speed limit written at the back of a truck and stick to it for miles!
Thanks in advance for your feedback and sorry for taking your time!

Wow,
Sounds like you should have stuck with VW !. It always grates with me when people say VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat.. its all the same cars with different badges. They aren't, they share components, technology, processes but each has its own distinct identity, strengths and weaknesses and design philosophies. I know you didn't say that but to jump from one to another and expect more of the same is a mistake. As to your issues-
1. I have the dual zone system, Ye Olde House Dragon likes its semi-tropical and I like it considerably cooler. I set mine, she sets hers and I don't even think about it when she isn't in the car. Personally I thought that was the whole point of the dual system ?
2. Not sure about that. I have a seperate ipod connected up via the AMI but when I did try the bluetooth streaming from the iphone I thought I could browse, don't quote me though.
3. No idea, sorry.
4. I have the colour DIS and tbh I think that using that is far superior than in my previous Jag XF where you had to glance across to the main screen. Eyes closer to the road is a good thing.
5. No idea, I don't have it but the non adaptive system has 1 mph increments so I don't see why the more expensive adaptive system shouldn't.
6. The lided box is a bit 'Tokyo apartment' in dimensions but there is a reasonable cubby underneath. Have you found the llittle lidded box in the front of your seat ? its good for your sunglasses, pack of tissues and some sweets.
7. There is a greyed out option under telephone for texts/SMS, I suspect it is the iphone not having sim access protocol that is the issue here, not the car.
8. If you have the optional interior lighting someone else will have to comment, in mine the red LED lighting is on the same control as the instrument lights.
9. No, it doesn't do that but if you press the volume button it stops the track (I think !)
10. I can't find an instant MPG figure but the bar works OK for me. The Jag had nada in this regard and it p'd me off something rotten (that said it didn't have an engine temp guage and that all but freaked me out)
11. Not noticed this in mine at all.
12. Convenient living brought to you by the wonder of modern technology !. I tend to read the signs myself but I have noticed in the Google maps view it bring up the speed limit in there.
Every single car I have owned has had its good and bad bits. To date my D3 A8 was the single best all round car I have ever owned but If I wanted to outrun the Police I would take the Jag, take on a challenging road the Alfa, Make people turn round and look- the XJ-S Convertible, re-live my best motoring moments- '68 Scimitar GTE. The point is You will always find something (s) that your new car does worse than your old one, part of that is you get so used to how a machine works it is frustrating when a new one doesn't do the same. For me I have a distinct feeling that if it behaves itself my 245 S-Line Avant might just topple the mighty A8 in my 'past car affections' list . It is a superb car to drive and fits me and mine like a glove.

Thanks for a valuable and reasonable opinion. I had VW for the past 5 years (VW Golf, Passat CC), but despite may things being simple, intuitive, nicely thought out and in general good - there were also annoying things. As soon as I got my Passat CC I was also not happy with many things, including the way it was built (since the begining doors, hood panels needed adjustmenets, frameless windows were not properly sealed), cruise control was faulty (would just randomly drop speed), Navi would hang, all plastics squeaked and rattled (especially in the lower temperatures). On my very first winter I was stuck at 2000 meters in Switzerland in a snow storm with a dead battery because it was also faulty from the very start. Over 2 years warranty I had replaced plastic trim around instruments in the dash (twice), armwrest, fuel pump and numerous other things. I checked all VW cars now on sale and none really fit my needs (unless I get another Passat) and I'm sick of quality issues. That's how I went with Audi, hoping to get simmilar ergonomics plus higher quality and comfort ;)

1. You only get syncing with the 4 zone system as it requires the digital controls for temp not the mechanical controls that you get with the 2 zone system, TBH I do nt find it an issue. I rarely find it necessary to adjust the temp. It amuses me how people think that by turning the temp up to a higher or lower it will get the car/room to the desired temp quicker. The whole system is thermostatically controlled if it needs heating or cooling it will do it and telling it to go to a more extreme temp will not get it there any quicker.
2. I have AMI so cannot comment as I never use BT streaming.
3. On the MMI screen you should get (at least you do with SD Card system) the next three instructions on the LH (for a RHD car) side of the screen with the distance/time to the instruction counting down. If there is a service station within the next set of instructions then that shows instead of one of the instructions.
4. Steering wheel controls control the DIS, MMI control controls the MMI screen. That is the way it is and no way to change it
5. On cars with the normal CC system you can change the speed in 1 mph increments up or down using the arm on the steering column. Push up to increase push down to decrease. Would have though it was the same for the ACC system
6. Find it adequate for an iPod Touch, an iPhone, a wallet and keys.
7. No and certainly here in the UK I suspect the authorities would frown upon it were it available whilst the car was moving given that we are not allowed to even hold the phone whilst driving. I can just imagine the conversation "I am sorry officer I didn't see the car because I was reading an e-mail!"
8.
9. Press either of the volume controls, it will mute and pause the track
10. Don't think so and I find the bar fine
11. Do not have this problem, but I am using AMI. Maybe it i down to the quality of the conversion to MP3. On other post you have commented on noise and mentioned that you have very sensitive hearing. Perhaps you are more receptive to certain frequencies that the rest of us do not hear.

1. I think this is a big ommission on the A6 as the digital display is standard lower down the range - I had this on my A4.
2. Too late for you now but AMI is the way to go
7. If using the dash SIM I think you can read SMS - it's not greyed out.

I do have AMI (fortunately), but I don't always want to dig my phone deep in the armwrest, especially during the shorter trips. Would be nice to have the same functionality over Bluetooth. I don't have a SIM card slot in the dash (did not take the Audi Connect), so only connectivity I get is over bluetooth.

Only a few things irritate me -
Deliberately crippled dipping passenger mirror (VAG can enable this) which is IMHO essential on such a wide car with alloys that are like magnets to kerb stones.
Non scrolling music titles in the MMI
Lack of FLAC support for music.
Lack of LED front indicators on the S-Line
otherwise it is brill!

Regarding point 10 i have instantaneous fuel consumption on the colour DIS, it's in the efficiency section.
Not sure is this is unique to colour DIS however.

On the standard DIS you only get "Best Gear" and how much fuel things like AC and Heated Mirrors are consuming. Must be a Colour DIS feature

Actually you can, providing you have telephone prep hi, it's an option when using the internal SIM, but it doesn't work with my iphone 4 as Scotty assumes correctly.
While you can't hold a phone while driving you can use a PTT radio, or phone with PTT capability, providing it's not deemed careless/dangerous. More dangerous is using that scribe pad in a RHD with your right hand!!!

It's not present for me. In the efficiency section I only have the bar graph of fuel use per hour for functions like air con, heated mirrors etc.
Could you take a picture?
Did you enable a VCDS trick?

Hi as anybody noticed the missing puddle lights on the rear doors? Surely for the A6 this should be on all 4 doors?
