Passat 140 tdi se estate 57 plate.

Have had the car from new with circa 70k on clock.

A couple of weeks ago I put the key in the dash and got warning bleeps with a yellow steering wheel symbol flashing. Took the key out and put it back in and all okay.

Checked the handbook and it warns of a fault with the electronic steering column lock.

Have not had any repeat warnings but a couple of days ago when I got in the car I was aware that the steering wheel lock felt more clunky than usual when the lock was released by inserting the key in the dash.

I have not tempted fate and have not put the steering lock on anymore when I park up.

As the flashing yellow symbol cleared straight away is it likely to be just one of those quirks or is there trouble in store?

Just had a steering lock problem with my 07 Passat, and as you can see from the links above, we're not the only ones. The warning was the first thing that happened, then the engine would cut out at start up. Sometimes the warning didn't appear but the engine was difficult to start and there were other warning lights too related to ignition. The problem was intermittant and at first I thought it was something wrong with the battery because of the engine start problems, but having the steering lock controller replaced resolved all issues. Well, all of 'those' issues.
