Hi all,

to those of you that opted for an A6 3.0TD, did anyone consider the A8 as it has similar engine, gearbox, performance etc..?

DTD has the A8 at £35k (£18.5k off) so it becomes a very difficult decision I'd have thought?

In fact I'm looking at the A6 2.0TD black edition for £31k and am wondering if I should go the extra £4k which gets me Audi's top saloon with the bigger engine.

Thoughts?

One point I would make is that the A8 is being updated in the new year (facelifted version announced at Frankfurt Show) so firstly it is likely DTD is looking to shift either existing stock or already ordered production and and second the residuals are likely to be worse on the A8 than the A6 because it is at the end of the run and also because it is a larger car with less demand in the market. Having said all of that I can fully appreciate your thought process.

I am going to get shot at for this but when I changed my D3 model A8 in 2010 I tried the D4 and especially for where I live and work (North Yorkshire) it was just too damn big and although a delight inside I couldn't help but feel that they had lost some of the old cars 'rightness' when it came to the styling. My dealer at the time was pushing me as hard as he could to get me into the then current C6 Quattro S-Line but for me the ride was too harsh and the deal was not too great as in his own words A6's were 'selling themselves' at that point. Among other things that led me into a Jag XF which I subsequently regretted (lovely driving very fast car but round here and for me about as practical as a set of knockers on a bull).

To be honest A8 deals as they are mean that for anybody looking at an even moderately speced up A6 Quattro can step into an A8 instead, you will almost invariably end up with more toys and if I had been going for a saloon I would have defo had another look. As it was I needed the extra space of an Avant and so it wasn't even a consideration but the latest A6 has leapt forward so much (and I think especially so in terms of the interior) from the previous model that I think it makes a very good case for itself even against the company flagship. In fact the overiding feeling I have in My new A6 is how much it reminds me of the D3 in terms of interior feel and general driving characteristics. All good as that A8 was to date the best car I have ever owned.

A8 is a wonderful car and I love it to death. Didn't buy one cos a, couldn't afford one and b, wouldn't get it on the drive. It's one big car.

Moving from an A4 to A6, the one big problem is that the A6 is a big car - hard to slot between narrow gaps, parking is more tricky, I need to pull right over on the drive so the missus can get her can past etc.

For this reason alone I would not consider an A8.

As others have pointed out, residuals are a problem, less economical, resale might be tricky, new model coming out. I think these all weigh against the A8 right now.
